India is one of the countries in which a large number of actors have been involved in politics. The majority of the celibates have gone into politics in the South of India. But since the Nehru era, film celebrities had taken part in Indian politics. Prithviraj Kapoor was the first prominent film personality to enter politics, who was continuously nominated for eight (1952-1960) years for Rajya Sabha for his excellent contributions as a drama artist and film actor. He has always appreciated his contributions to cinema and the theater and he was close to Pandit Nehru. M G Ramachandran, N T Rao Rama, J Jayalalitha, Amitabh Bachchan, etc. are other early trends.
However, in the 1970s, 1980s and even in the 1990s, only a few movie actors engaged in active politics. However, popular politics have been rising massively over the last few years. Only a few popular people have had a real influence, for example, on politics and human life. Let us know the celebrities, who were successes and failures, all of them in politics.
When we talk about MGR, he’s the person who marked great with others, and the people who handled him have a family member. He entered politics by playing a key role in the DMK faction. After that, because of some preserves, he started the new party ALL India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam. He became a big success in his political career, and his party won all elections to the state as long as he was alive. From 1977 until he died in 1987, he served as CM of Tamil Nadu. He has been the most famous politician in the South so far.
The prestige of MGR as a popular person was also commensurate with his political engagement. He worked on the state’s social advancement and his best accomplishment was the state’s pioneering Mid-Day meal system. By following him, Sivaji Ganesan was also a politician. Thamizhaga Munnetra Munnani began a party of his own. He couldn’t do politics when shining in the film industry.
Coming to the next NTR founded the Telugu Desam Party in 1982. His popularity helped him secure 35 of the 40 Lok Sabha seats in the 1984 elections. He served as Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh for seven years in three terms from 1983 to 1995. As the CM of Andhra Pradesh, he began a program of distributing subsidized rice to the needy. This was a groundbreaking scheme that later culminated in the National Food Security Mission.
Amitabh Bachchan also stopped acting in 1984 to contest the Lok Sabha election. The MP of Lok Sabha in Allahabad has been elected. But he left politics and promised that he would never enter politics again, because of suspicions of his role in the Bofors scam.
Moreover, some actors came into politics as the Congress Party MP Rajesh Khanna was from New Delhi in the early 1990s. In 1996, he quit politics. The Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha were part of Shatrughan Sinha. He also served in the BJP Government under a B Vajpayee Minister of Health and Family Welfare and Shipping.
Govinda elected in 2004 for a seat from the Congress Party, but left in 2008 following a failed political move. In both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, Hema Malini was a BJP MP and now is Mathura’s Lok Sabha MP. Smriti Irani was a Rajya Sabha member, serving as Union Government Minister. Since 2004, Jaya Bachchan was the Samajwadi Party’s Rajya Sabha MP. In Andhra state Assembly elections, Chiranjeevi founded the Praja Rajyam Party, which became the biggest party. He was appointed State Minister of the Union in 2012.
After becoming a prolific industrial agent with 140 films in the years 1961 and1980, late Chief Minister Selvi J. Jayalalithaa turned to politics as well. In 1982, Jayalalitha entered the M-founded AIADMK party. G. Ramachandran, her ordinary co-star, too. In 1991, she became the youngest Tamil Nadu, Chief Minister. Moreover, many people don’t know that the actor came to politics and left due to their failure.
Through nominating Rajya Sabha, most film celebrities enter politics at the national level. Under Article 80 of the constitution, the President of India shall be empowered to select 12 out of the 250 Rajya Sabha members from the field of literature, science, art, and social services with unique knowledge and practical experience.
Everyone is entitled to take part in the democratic processes, and there is no exception to institutions and actors. The selection of actors in line with the Constitution’s mandate is made as Members of Parliament. They may have a positive influence on democracy as the acts of film celebrities are judged/emultimated by their role on the silver screen. This allows them to motivate/mobilize individuals quickly. They will thrive as long as they have the leadership qualities and connect with the people they need after the initial success of the election. This is not generally the case, however. Their popularity gives them instant political success but is not sustainable, and politics’ mortality rates are extremely high in India. Most of them would either end shortly or without much success in their political life.
