Ki .Rajanarayanan was a prolific writer of the twentieth century.his story ‘the chair'centres on the need of. Chair for the narrator's family as well as for his village.
NARRATOR 'S FAMILY:
The narrator was one of the children in the family.pedanna ,the first born elder brother of the narrator ,played a responsible role .his maternal uncle,maamanaar was the great moral support to the family .he is the icon of charity, cleanliness and perfectionist.these were the main characters of the story.
ARRIVAL OF THE SUB-JUDGE:
Once a sub-judge visited the family.the only three legged and three fourth stool was brought for the visitor .he placed his one hand on its edge and sat on it.At once he fell down with a thud and rolled over .the children giggled and the elders suppressed their giggles .the family decided to make two chairs.one for them and the other for maamanaar.
ARRIVAL OF THE CHAIR:
THE CHAIRS WERE RAMA-LAKSHMANA
The elder sister's suggestion of making chair was accepted.but they found it difficult to make a chair.Because there was no model and there wasn't a single carpenter to make a chair in their village.A comfortable chair was made with black wood with mirror like gleam , perfectly shaped legs.After the arrival of the chair, children in the family would sit and stroke the arms of chair. People in the village came in hordes to see the chair.A few stroked it .An old man lifted it and commanded the carpenter.
USE OF THE CHAIR:
Later,the villagers borrowed the chair to prop up and eminent persons corpse.though it was washed after that , the children were afraid to sit on it. It was overcame as guests and elders sir on it the chair was continued to use for propping up the corpse.pedanna was irritated and once he sent the bereaved people to his maamanaar's house to ask for the chair.maamanaar gave his chair to the villagers to retain it for propping up the corpses
CONCLUSION:
LIFE IS NOT ABOUT GETTING AND HAVING;IT IS ABOUT GIVING AND BEING.
Though maamanaar was a stingiest person ,he understood the villagers and handed over the chair for propping up the corpse.the author highlights the attitude of younger generation and elders humourously
MORAL:CHARITY BEGINS AT HOME.
