INTRODUCTION:

Edmund Hillary and Tenzing norgay were the first to reach the mount Everest.Hillary has written his own experiences. It was an expedition of six men namely Hillary, Tenzing, George lowe, Alfred Gregory and two sherpas -Pemba and Ang nyima. on may 28,1853 leaving others behind, Hillary and Tenzing set off to reach the summit from height of 27,900 feet .

PREPARATION:

On 29 may early morning, they both woke up and got ready to climb.they heated and drank large quantities of lemon juice.they ate the last tin of of sardines on biscuts.Hillary cleaned and tested the oxygen sets.He heated his wet boots over primus stove and softened them.they wire their windproof on their clothing and three pairs of gloves -silk, woolen and windproof.at 6.30 a.m.they set off to the summit.

JOURNEY TO SOUTH PEAK :

From there 28,000 feet , the ridge narrowed to a knife edge. The soft snow was difficult and dangerous. It sometimes bear the weight of Hillary but often slippery.on their way, they relieved by the two oxygen bottles left by the previous climbers .They often changed leads .once ,Hillary slipped a few steps. He lost hope but Tenzing did not give up.Finally, they reached firm snow of south peak by 9 a.m .

TWO AND HALF HOURS SEEMED LIFETIME:

Indeed , the ridge was difficult and dangerous to climb.there were giant cornices on the right and steep rocks on the left . they had no idea where the top was.they cut humps one after the other to pave way . time was passing and the ridge seemed never -ending .their orginal zest was fading away .but with determination and guidance of higher spirit, they reached the summit by the 11.30 a.m. Hillary acknowledged that the ridge had taken two and a half hours, but it seemed like a life time.

SENSE OF FULFILLMENT:

When they reached the summit, Hillary felt a sense of relief because there were no more steps to cut,no more ridges to Tenzing showed grin of delight through his helmet, goggles and oxygen mask.they shook their hands.they hugged and thumbed each other .they showed their tribute to God by placing chocolates, biscuits ,lollies and crucifix in a hole in the summit.

THE MOST IMPORTANT PHOTOGRAPH:

From the summit, they saw the splendid view of ranges and valleys.

To the east, they saw the giant neighbour makalu.Far away ,there was the great bulk of kanchenjunga.

To The west ,they saw the great -un explored ranges of Nepal.

The photograph portrayed a shot down the north ridge, showing the north col and old route which had been made famous by great climbers of 1920's and 1930's.

CONCLUSION:

“There is no height,no depth , that the spirit of man guided by higher spirit, canot attain.”the conquest of the Everest by Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hillary is the clear evidence for determination and dedication.
