Many of us after having a meal and most of the times in a day feel like eating something like desserts .This is nothing but sugar cravings. Sugar cravings that strike after a meal may be due to a feel-good brain chemical which is known as serotonin. That chemical is associated with an elevated mood .Eating a sugary dessert causes serotonin levels to rise in brain, which can make you feel calmer and happier.
Another query that comes into our mind is does blood sugar levels relate to cravings? There is very little evidence indicating this to be true. Food cravings mostly come under psychological phenomenon which relates to old food habits and learning. The most likely reason that we see cravings in people is mostly due to the eating patterns. Below listed are some reasons:
Skipping Meals: The most common cause for sugar cravings is when the body needs more fuel. When you eat a food containing carbohydrates, the digestive system breaks down the digestible ones into sugar, which enters the blood and then is transported to the cells where it is used for energy . When we go too long without eating, our cells become starved for fuel and brain sends out a signal that we need to consume more carbohydrates.
Stress Hormones: The stress response is controlled by hormones cortisol and epinephrine(also known as adrenalin) which is released by adrenal glands. This may sometimes create serious hormonal imbalance, raising blood pressure and insulin levels. This triggers the cravings to consume more sugar so we are ready to run!

People suffering from depression, your hormone levels tend to plummet, which also has effect on metabolism. This is probably most people turn towards โcomfort foodsโ like ice cream, chocolate, cakes and so on when they go through bouts of depression. The reason for this is that most people go through intense sugar cravings when they feel depressed. The sugar cravings for them is only for short period of time .Be prepared to experience some sugar cravings, for as long as you remain depressed.
So, try to control the cravings by having alternatives like fruits, berries, chia seeds etc. Don't let it control you.
