After Independence many committees are appointed by the government to measure the poverty in India.
In 1950 National Sample survey organisation (NSSO) was set up by the India Statistical Institute on behalf of the Govt to conduct large scale sample surveys throughout India.
In 2014, the Rangarajan Committee said that the population below the poverty line was 454 million (38.2% of the population) in 2009-2010 and was 363 million (29.5% of the population) in 2011–2012 by taking poverty line as Rs.47 per person per day in urban area and Rs. 32 per person per day in rural area.
According to the World Bank Poverty headcount ratio at $ 1.90 a day on PPP in 2011 was 32.8% of the population and Multidimensional poverty headcount ratio was 42.1% of the population in 2011
