The Thrissur Pooram, a splendid celebration marked by a huge display of caparisoned elephants, sparkling parasols, and percussion music, is a magnificent show fusing Kerala's spiritual and cultural essence. Thekkinkadu Maidanam in Thrissur is the site of the pooram, which is observed during the Malayalam month of medam (April–May).

The temples were divided into "Paramekkavu side" and "Thiruvambady side" groups by Sakthan Thampuran. The Paramekkavu Bagavathi Temple at the Thrissur Swaraj Round and the Thiruvambadi Sri Krishna Temple on the Shoranur Road are the main players in these.

This biennial temple celebration, which Shakthan Thampuran, the Maharaja of Kochi, organised with the involvement of 10 temples, is regarded as the mother of all poorams (Paramekkavu, Thiruvambadi Kanimangalam, Karamucku, Laloor, Choorakottukara, Panamukkampally, Ayyanthole, Chembukkavu, Neythilakavu).

The event is distinguished by the kudamattom ritual and features an entertaining line-up of vibrantly decorated elephants. The kudamattom ritual, which involves the quick and rhythmic switching of colourful and sequined parasols, is one of the highlights and is a closely observed event.

The ilanjithara melam, a highly captivating performance of traditional instruments that transports the thousands gathering to a state of rapture and bliss, is another highlight. The thousands of spectators that wave their hands in time with the rhythm created by the chenda, kurumkuzhal, kombu, and elathalam reflect the spirit of the approximately 250 performers in this traditional orchestra, which is directed by chenda artists (traditional instruments of Kerala). A large fireworks display heralds the conclusion.

As the globe struggles to contain the continuing corona virus pandemic, all festivities in Kerala, including religious ones, are postponed. No religious assemblies will be allowed in order to stop the virus from spreading, although places of worship may carry out the festival-related rites as usual.

Explosion of fireworks (first round)
The first display of fireworks, referred to as Sample Vedikettu, takes place four days after the Pooram's flag-raising ceremony. The hosts of the one-hour programme are Thiruvambady and Paramekkavu Devaswoms. The fireworks display takes place at Swaraj Round and begins at 7:15 p.m. The spectacle typically features unique fireworks in creative designs.  Despite various disputes, permission was given to hold the Thrissur Pooram in 2017

Explosion of fireworks (main round)
The Thrissur pooram major fireworks (vedikettu / ) are well known throughout the nation. Thekkinkadu Maidan, in the centre of the city of Thrissur, is where this magnificent fireworks display takes place.

The two main competitors in this tournament are Thiruvambadi and Parmekavu. On the seventh day, the main fireworks start early in the morning. To have a better view of the pyrotechnics, the majority of pooram aficionados stay up all night. People go great distances to see this spectacular pyrotechnic show. In Thrissur Pooram, there are four main fireworks displays: the "sample fireworks" on the day before the Pooram, the bright sparklers that light up the sky (amittu) by both sides on the Pooram evening after the Southward Descent, and the most spectacular display that takes place on the night of the Pooram.
