First and foremost, what is a goal? An aim is a personal purpose in this case. Anything you want to do in a certain amount of time.
Goals are flexible and adaptive, and they can be used for short-term activities like booking a vacation or long-term objectives like graduating from university. So, how do we go about achieving our objectives? There are several approaches to this; I will outline the five steps that I have found to be effective. Keep in mind that this is a crucial life ability, so pay attention...
1. Decide exactly what you want:--
It would be easier to know when your objectives are complete if they are concise and straightforward. Objectives should be precise and observable, just as in industry. Ensure that they are attainable and within the realms of possibility; otherwise, they can become demotivating. Decide what do you want and where do you want to be going.
2. Write it down on paper:--
If you don't write down your aspirations, they'll all be wishes. When you put pen to paper, something magical happens: your writing imprints itself on your subconscious. As with any learning, I've discovered that writing by hand is more powerful than writing on a screen.
3. Set a deadline for it:--
Set deadlines and sub-deadlines for your targets in case you need to break them down. Set practical yet ambitious time frames for yourself so that your objectives are challenging. Goals are in place to get things started and, as we all know, life isn't a dress rehearsal.
4. Get it out there:--
This means posting a list of targets in a prominent location at home or at work, or, if you prefer, posting pictures of what you want to accomplish. When we see our goals, we send a vital message to our brain, which stimulates us, and we then take the necessary steps to achieve them.
Also, let the world know what your ambitions are. It would be very difficult for you to pull out as a result of this. If you've ever participated in a charity race, you'll understand what I'm talking about.
5. Take action immediately:--
You must maintain momentum, and you should hopefully be taking an action every day that will get you one step closer to your target. Take action by buying a brochure or scheduling a test drive, for example, if you want to own a brand new Rolls-Royce.
So there you have it, the five stages, which aren't exactly rocket science. It seems easy enough, but the key is to keep going and get closer to your goals every day. I've discovered that the more specific my goals are, the more likely I am to achieve them. Working with goals has proven to be extremely effective for me, especially when they are written down and visible every day.
Your subconscious gets to work, and it may seem like you're achieving a task on autopilot at times. So take your time to figure out exactly what you want before placing your order... Having said that, if you don't already have that clarity, it's best to write something down now so you can see how your goals evolve over time. Keep in mind that goals aren't set in stone, and because they're yours, they're up to you to achieve them.
