Saint Thiruvalluvar statue is a 133 feet (40.6 meters) tall stone sculpture of the famous Tamil poet and philosopher located on small island near the town of Kanyakumari. This gigantic statue was built by the Tamil government in honour of the Saint Thiruvalluvar which is now one of the key attraction in Kanyakumari. This stone sculpture has been made in a 38 feet long pedestal. Along with the height of the pedestal the statue is of 133 feet. The 38 feet of the pedestal represents the 38 chapters of the virtue and the total 133 feet represents the 133 chapters in Thirukkural – the sacred couplets. The total weight of the statue is 7000 tons. Visitors are attracted when they see the statue of Thiruvalluvar - built according to the principles of Vastu science, which surrounds the ocean and gives visitors a majestic view. Tourists can easily get there by a short ferry ride.
The 3 tiered pedestal called Atharapeedam is surrounded by an artistic Mandapa called Alankara Mandapam and in addition it is surrounded by 10 elephant statues showing 8 directions on earth and 2 on space. Tourists have to climb about 140 steps to reach the sacred feet of Saint Thiruvalluvar.
Status has another interesting unique feature, it is the right hand with three fingers pointing to the sky, which represents the three parts of the excellent Thirukkural writing - Aram, Porul and Inbam which means virtue , wealth and love.
The greatest attraction of the Statue is the 19-foot detail of the Saint's face. The individual rocks are supported by palm and ironwood stumps.
The construction of the statue began in 1979, by the Prime Minister, but the installation and carving began in 1990. The construction was completed in 1999 and the inauguration ceremony was carried out by the Prime Minister. Donated Tamil Nadu on 1 January 2000. This stone sculpture is designed in such a way that it can withstand natural disasters like earthquakes.

How to get to Statue of Saint Thiruvalluvar, Kanyakumari
Kanyakumari is well connected by road to major towns in the state. The statue is only 400 meters from the mainland. It is located near Vivekananda Puram from where you take the ferry. Ferries stop at Thiruvalluvar
