                    SECTION 3

The next morning after breakfast, the two girls went towards Miss Brown's house with the candle and the napkin. The path was overgrown with weeds and grass.

“Indu, wasn't the path gravelled and lined with flowers when we came last night?”

Indu did not reply. She was staring wide-eyed shock at the door . . . It was unhinged, with huge cobwebs criss-crossing it. There was dust and years of neglect all around.

“What in the name of . . .” began Indu, when they heard the gardener Rahim call out.

         “Don't go there, beta!”

Indu and Vandana with gardener Rahim chacha

“We were going to return Miss Brown's napkin and candle but she seemed to have left early,” said Indu.

“Yes! She left very early; eighty years ago in fact! You see, she has been dead all these years.”

“But how can that be? We were with her last evening, sitting in her drawing room, drinking cocoa and eating scones!” protested Vandana.

“Yesterday! Oh no . . . It was the sixth of June yesterday, wasn't it?”

“Oh Rahim chacha, please tell us what this is all about?” The girls were perplexed, to say the least.

“You see, Miss Brown lived in this house all her life and was very attached to it. It is the local legend that she comes to visit it on her birthday every year and waits for company. Folks say they have seen lights on the sixth of June! But no one has seen her . . .”

“Which means . . . ” The girls looked at each other, their faces were pale. Vandana stared at the napkin that had E.B. monogrammed on it. If Miss Brown was not a real person, what about the napkin and the candle which belonged to her and which they now held in their hands? And what about the scones they had eaten?

          They would never know.
