History Of Pin Code

Hello guys,

Everyone is common with the word PIN Code. Today I am going to share some details about it.

When you send a letter or package through the Indian postal system or by courier, do you wonder if it will surely reach its destination? The chances that your letter will reach the intended recipient increase every time you remember to provide the recipient's PIN code.
India is a huge country with 28 states, 773 districts and 558688 villages, so it was very difficult for Indian Postal Service to find the right place or person. To facilitate the delivery of letters and parcels, a 6-digit Postal Code (PIN) was introduced by the Indian Postal Service on August 15, 1972.

The Indian Postal Service has established 9 specific PIN regions across the country, 8 of which are geographic regions and the 9th is reserved for the Indian Army.
Each digit of the 6-digit number has a specific meaning. The first digit designates the entire geographic region, and the first two digits designate the postal district or sub-region. The third digit designates the sorting districts.
The fourth digit represents the route on which a delivery office is located in the sorting district. This is 0 for offices in the core area of the sorting district.
The last two digits represent the delivery office within the sorting district, starting with 01, which would be the General Post Office (GPO) or Head Office (HO). The delivery offices are numbered chronologically, with newer delivery offices being assigned higher numbers. If the volume of mail at a delivery point is too high, a new delivery point is set up and the next available PIN is assigned. Two delivery points next to each other only have the first four digits in common.

The first digit of the PIN indicates the following:

Covered area of the first digit
1 North Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir
2 Northern Uttar Pradesh and Uttaranchal
3 Western Rajasthan and Gujarat
4 Western Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Chattisgarh
5 Southern Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka
6 South Kerala and Tamil Nadu
7 East West Bengal, Orissa and Northeast
8 Eastern Bihar and Jharkand
9 APS Field Post

The first 2 digits of the PIN indicate the following:

Sample illustration

If the PINCODE is 500072, 5 represents the southern region and 50 represents Telangana. 500 indicates Rangareddy/Hyderabad District and the last 3 digits (072) indicate the post office of the KPHB colony in that area. The mail department sorts incoming mail and forwards it to the correct post office.

Shipping address:

Each PIN is associated with exactly one delivery post office that receives all mail to be delivered to one or more sub-offices within its jurisdiction, all sharing the same code. The delivery office can be either a main post office (GPO), main office (HO) or subsidiary office (SO), which are usually located in urban areas. The mail from the delivery office is sorted and forwarded to other delivery offices for a different PIN or to one of the appropriate extensions or branches for the same PIN. Branch Offices (BOs) are located in rural areas and have limited postal services.

The government plans to add two more digits to PIN numbers, which will help the postman identify the location by increasing the digits from six to eight. The last two digits would be between 02 and 99. Not only does this help in smooth mail delivery, but it also makes things easier for the postal department when they start using machines. This experiment has started in select locations and will soon be rolled out nationwide.
