No one certainly for sure knows how the first pizza was cooked, invented or how it was eaten. Some theories date back as early as the new stone age. Archaeologists have similar food to pizza in the form of some bread with toppings. What we do recognize is that, during 997 AD pizza first started emerging in Medieval Latin. At one point pizza was used as the measuring device to test the temperature of the oven. The dish didn't have much significance and wasn't taken into consideration for quite some time. Before pizza came to America. it was made with white sauce. Why do you think? Because tomatoes has been native to America and didn't come to Europe until only later on. Raffaele Esposito became the first chef to add cheese on a pizza. He did this around 1889, in honour of the Queen consort of Italy. He made a pizza with tomatoes, mozzarella cheese, and basil to symbolize the colours of the Italian flag. The tomatoes were brought back sometime in the sixteenth century in Europe. Europeans were always cautious of the tomatoes and assumed them to be poisonous. By the end of the eighteenth century it was common among the people from the area of Naples to add tomatoes to their flat breads, thereby the modern day pizza was born. After the dish gained popularity it became a huge hit among the tourists.

Pizza made its way to America via the Italian immigrants in the late nineteenth century. Cities with high Italian populations such as New York, San Francisco, Chicago, Philadelphia had pizzas being offered in the streets of Italian neighborhood through peddlers. It was not long before small cafes were set up in these areas to sell pizzas to the citizens. The first official pizzeria within USA became founded by Gennaro Lombardi in Little Italy, Manhattan. It was originally started as a grocery store 1897, however later have become a pizzeria in 1905.

Before World War II pizza was popular only among the Italian population. However at some stage when the allies were stationed in Italy, they were under constant worry about their rations. They were searching for some good food and they stumbled upon pizzas and brought their love for the dish back home. It is believed that pizza exploded in the Midwest due to the opening of the Pizza Hut in the year 1958. Today there are so many places that set up chains to specialize in pizza and home delivery. Dominoes is another chain that's very popular for their quality and home delivery.
