Bora Bora is a cluster of islands located in the Leeward Islands in the South Pacific. The Leeward Islands make up the western section of the Society Islands in French Polynesia, a territory of the French Republic located in the Pacific Ocean. Bora Bora spans a combined land area of 30.55 square kilometers (12 square miles)…

The primary island, situated approximately 230 kilometers (125 nautical miles) northwest of Papeete, is encircled by a lagoon and a barrier reef. At the island's core lie the remains of a dormant volcano, with two peaks, Mount Pahia and Mount Otemanu, reaching a maximum height of 727 m (2,385 ft). Bora Bora belongs to the Commune of Bora-Bora, which also consists of the atoll of Tūpai. The primary languages used in Bora Bora are Tahitian and French. Nevertheless, because of the large number of tourists, a significant number of locals in Bora Bora have acquired the ability to communicate in English.

Bora Bora is a popular global tourist spot known for its high-end resorts located on the coast and even in the surrounding waters. The primary village, Vaitape, is located on the west coast of the main island, facing the main entrance to the lagoon. The island's output is primarily confined to what can be acquired from the ocean and the abundant coconut trees, which have been historically valuable for copra production.,,

Back in the past, the island was known as Pora pora mai te pora, which translates to "made by the gods" in the Tahitian dialect of the region. This was frequently shortened to Pora Pora, which simply means "first born". The Tahitian, English, French, and Dutch languages all have distinct phoneme sets, resulting in variations in the spelling and pronunciation of names across languages. In Tahitian, the sound denoted by ⟨p⟩ is in between [p] and [b], as the language does not differentiate between these two sounds. Additionally, the sound represented by ⟨r⟩ is similar to both [l] and [ɹ̠], which are not found in English. People who speak English, French, or Dutch may mix up the Tahitian pronunciation of Pora Pora as Bola Bola or Bora Bora. Upon arriving on the island for the first time, explorer Jacob Roggeveen and his crew decided to call it Bora Bora, a name that has remained unchanged to this day.

Thus, Bora Bora is a small island comprising of three villages: Anau, Faanui , and Vaitape . Less than 9,000 people live in the area permanently. The area is only 29.3 km in size, too small for any public transportation services. If you intend to go there, make sure to be ready to either walk or hire a car, bicycle, or two-person buggy.
