Introduction

 In India english is taught in each and every states school. English teaching is very complicated task in India. The way of teaching english is very different in diffrent part of India. We know that english is taught as second language in india and when any language is taught as second language it become very necessary to know for teacher “ how and what to teach to student” because it is very difficult to use suitable method.

The grammer translation method

The grammer translation method is the oldest method of teaching english. This method is also known as the classical method. In the grammer translation method the students first study the part of speech and syntax in detail. The sentence in English and mother tongue were compared and contrasted side by side. Basically in this method the mother tongue used to teach english.

⚫ In this method the child associates foreign words with translated words so strong memory bond is created.

⚫ The uses of mother tongue helps the children in vocabulary getting. It save time and it is more effective. 

⚫ The word and phrases are easily learnt and explained if translation method is used.

⚫ This method is very useful in over crowded class.

Disadvantage

⚫ The grammer translation method does not emphasis on the basic skill like listening and speaking.

⚫ It is not possible to translate important aspect of spoken language like pronunciation, articulation, intonation, pauses, pitch etc.

⚫ Some of linguistic itens can not be translated into mother tongue like aritcle a, an, the. 

⚫ Student get no opportunity to participate in the discussion of the unit.

⚫ Translation into mother tongue affect the orignality and beauty of words. It affect the sense and beauty of the word.

⚫ It prevent students to think directly in English. Student first think in mother tounge and then translate it into english. Thus it establishing of direct bond between thought and expression.
