Intrauterine insemination is a fertility procedure where washed sperm is directly injected to the uterus through vagina.

During natural conception, sperms have to travel from vagina through cervix into the uterus and upto fallopian tubes where fertilization takes place.During this procedure washed sperms are put directly into the uterus which puts them closer to the egg.This process can help certain couple to get pregnant.

Iui is beneficial for whom?

Unexplained infertility.

Issues with cervical mucus.

Decreased sperm motility.

Iui isn't affective.

Women with severe endometriosis.

Blocked fallopian tubes ( both). Before doing this procedure, you have yo ensure atleast one of your tubes is working properly.

Iui treatment steps.

Iui treatment starts from day 2 of menstrual cycle. Some fertility medications are given for female partner for multiple follicle (egg) growth. If you are young age or your amh level is good, you are given only tablets. for others, injection like gonal f is prescribed.Then utrasound scan is scheduled on day 9. Then after follow up scan will be done for follicle measurement. When the follicle growth is around 18- 20 mm, a trigger ( HCG) injection is given for ovolution. Then after 48 hours of this injection iui procedure is scheduled.

What to expect during iui.

Iui is a non invasive painless procedure. A semen sample is to be given by the husband on the day. This semen sample is washed to get good quality motile sperms. This will take 1- 2 hours. Then You will be asked to lie down on the table.The doctor will use the speculam to open vagina and visualise cervix. Then the washed sperm is directly injected to the uterus.This procedure will take only a couple of minutes. After this procedure, you will be asked to lie down for 10- 20 minutes.

After this procedure you may experience some mild cramping. You can go home then after. No hospitalization is required.Also.no anasthesia is needed.

No bed rest is needed. You can resume to your normal activities . But avoid hectic works or heavy exercises.

Doctor will prescribe progesteone tablet for next 14 days. After finishing the tablet, you can perform a urine pregnancy test.Actually the 2 week waiting period is stressful. The hardest part is, success rate is only 15- 20 percentage. But on repeating the procedure for next cycle increases the success rate. After undergoing 4- 6 cycles of iui and no positive pregnancy, then definitely you go for next treatment option. That is you may prefer IVF.
