In the late 19th Century, the era of the brew machine brought us closer to the age of the modern espresso as we know it today. Making coffee with steam pressure was well known in Europe in the 19th Century. The first person to make commercial machine and patented it was Angelo Moriondo, Italy, in 1884.

He manufactured a very small amount of machines including a burner at the bottom of a vertical boiler. Moriondo is considered today as the father of the Espresso machine.

Angelo Moriondo was born in 6 June 1851, in Marentino, Turin, Italy. Moriondo came from a entrepreneurial family. He represented his invention at the General Exhibition in Turin in 1884, where it received a bronze medal. The patent was granted for a period of six years on 16 May 1884 under the titleNew steam machinery for the economic and instantaneous confection of coffee beverage, method ‘A. Moriondo’." The machine was built by a craftsman named Martina. It was successfully patented on 20 November 1884.

“Espresso is the best thought of as neither a sort of coffee, nor a sort of beverage, however because the outcome of a selected preparation method." This is written by Jonathan Morris in 2010.

In Italian, that process consists of four Ms:

  1. Macchina(Machine)
  2. Macinazione(Grind)
  3. Miscela(Blend)
  4. Mano(Barista)

The preparation and brewing methods are totally different from the historically accustomed brew coffee when compared to the table top espresso machine.

However espresso machines use a particularly fine grind to confirm that the water passes through the grounds evenly. The most important distinction between brewing coffee and the espresso is that the use of steam and water pressure to bring out the wealthy flavors within the beans.

The first espresso machine installed in the United States in 1927. It was the “La Pavoni” machine and was installed at Reggio in New York.

WORKING METHOD:

Earlier, the espresso machines passed steam through the coffee, giving it a burnt flavor. A piston pump was developed by Cremonesi in 1938. It forces hot, non boiling water into the coffee, giving it a more natural flavor and a layer of foam that over time become one of the main quality of espresso coffee.

Multiple machine designs have been created to produce espresso. Such as,

  • Piston driven machine
  • Steam driven machine
  • Pump driven machine
  • Air pump driven machine

The Espresso machine has evolved over a period of time. But the taste of the coffee still make haste in our hearts.
