What if inland areas are flooded?
If the Godavari overflows and if floods reach 23 lakh cusecs this time as it did last year, there is growing concern that the floodplains will be submerged. As everyone already knows that The Polavaram Project is a multi-purpose irrigation National project which is lying on the Godavari River and it is still under construction.
Finance Ministry Chief Secretary Shamsher Sanh Rawat has recently issued an order releasing Rs 746 crore for the construction of the project by 2021-22. Of this, only Rs 178 crore has been earmarked for assisted resettlement of the highest priority displaced and the remaining Rs 560 crore has been earmarked for project major works. It will cost up to Rs 350 crore to carry out relief and rehabilitation programs for 41.15 Contour. The funds are expected to be released by March this year, officials said in a review conducted by Chief Minister YS Jaganmohan Reddy with the Water Resources Ministry. But funds at that level have not been released. The government has challenged the opposition to build 50,000 houses for Polavaram residents by July 8 last year. So far no exaggeration. The June floods will come next month. This means that the government has directed the Department of Water Resources to complete the upper and lower cofferdams this month. Completing them would cause severe damage to flood victims in the 41.15m contour. All the Lankan villages will be submerged. Extreme levels of flood danger were announced in at least two places. At the time of the proposal, Jagan had repeatedly said that the construction of the project was not the work of the headworks, but to help the displaced who had lost their lands for the project. He also promised before the election that he would make extra payments to those who bought land in 2004 at lower prices. Now, if they want to vacate their houses, they have to pay compensation in advance ... they are also demanding an increase. Until then the villages would be evacuated. Till now only Rs 178 crore has been released for related activities.
