Stalking Through The Lens Of The Movie "Greta".

Stalking is a problem that is more common than you think. There are many people who face this harassment in their daily lives but are scared to share this problem with anyone.

Stalking is defined as actions in which a person knowingly and repetitively indulges in harassment and bullying targeted at another individual that fairly and deeply concerns, terrorizes, or mistreats that individual.

Stalking is a type of abuse that makes people feel anxious and vulnerable to exploitation.

Each type of situation with a psychopath will be different, however, the primary objective has always been the same and that is to leave you feeling highly susceptible. The psychopaths follow a definitive pattern to harass the victims. The most common ones are frequent and undesired messages via telephone conversations, telegraph, email messages or online sites of social media. They follow the victim where they often visit, in school, at home or elsewhere.

I'd like to illustrate this idea by reviewing the film "Greta", which was recently released on Netflix. Let us find out how stalking and abuse could have easily been addressed in this film but were not, and what could have been done to prevent Frances abduction and torture.
Greta, Frances, lives in New York and is alone following the death of her mother. Frances discovers a pricey bag in the subway and returns it to Greta's much older Greta (Isabelle Huppert), the subject of Greta's wicked and deadly obsession.

Frances pays Greta a visit to return the handbag, and their relationship grows. Greta is an elderly and lonely widow who seems to be very hospitable and polite at first. Frances wants to find her a family dog to keep her company because she recently lost her mother and is looking for a mother figure in her.
She eventually discovers that the lady is not who she appears to be and is hiding a completely different identity. As she cuts all communication with the lady, she becomes obsessed with her and begins threatening her. She calls her several times, leaves hundreds of messages on her mobile, and, worst of all, begins following her at her workplace.

The ending is upsetting because what seems to be ordinary stalking quickly turns into kidnapping and torture. Greta kidnaps Frances and imprisons her behind her piano in a hidden room. Frances is imprisoned in the room for several days before being saved by her friend Erica.

First and foremost, the film portrays stalkers as having no age or gender, which I considered to be very practical and believable. The stalker in the film is an elderly woman, which is unusual and rare. Who after all is going to accuse an elderly lady? However, I believe that no one can be trusted unless we know them well.

The first flaw in the film is that, despite repeated warnings from her friend Erica, Francis does not heed the warnings and becomes overly nice with the lady despite knowing little about her (whatever she tells her is obviously a lie).
The second thing that didn't make sense to me was that the police refused to help or take any action despite seeing the old lady chasing her. I mean, she was looking at her through the restaurant window for hours, which was very weird. Torture might have been prevented if the police had taken the appropriate action in a timely manner, and such a gruesome incident would not have occurred with the girl.

The final thing or negative element of the film that utterly puzzled me was why, despite knowing that the lady is a psychopath, someone would go and tell her of their whereabouts or potential travel plans.
I completely lost it when Frances told her that she will be leaving the city the next day. What was the point of doing that? It's almost as if you're asking her to come and hurt you.
These were some of the aspects that made no sense to me, and I thought that the torture and harassment Frances experienced in the film could have been prevented with some protective measures and simple steps

If you or someone you know is in this situation, please reach out to your loved ones. In this film, Frances makes a major mistake by failing to tell her father about the whole incident she was involved in. She would not have had such a major problem if she had told her father ahead of time. As a result, my recommendation is that you confide in your family and friends so that you can feel safe and secure.
