Marriage,the basis of forming a family regulates the impluses of people,through the reproduction functions.primary universal function of the family is the creation of new members of society.regulations of the procreation and maintenance, providing the basis needs such as food,water and clothing are some of the functions of family.family gives physical and emotional protection to the individual especially to children, elderly,insane and the sick.individuals are able to express their needs,thoughts and feelings openly in a family.family creates a sense of psychological identity to members.as individual closely identifies himself with the family.the ethnic,religions,nationality and other kinds of status is described by the family to its members.family helps a child to develop his basic personality.family moulds the personality of the child.an individual picks up social skills in a family which facilitates interaction with the society.family is an agency for socialization.socialisation is a learning process which makes an individual an acceptable member of society.an individual an acceptable member of society.an individual imbites values from his family.family teaches values such as respect for elders,love,forgiveness,patience and etc...

Compulsory function of a family:

Family must satisfy sex needs of its members through the institution of marriage.in other words,family should arrange for the marriage of its children at an appropriate time.

Family has to ensure that it's provides food, clothing and shelter to its members to the best of its capacity.this responsibility primary falls on the earning member of the family.

Family should give abundance love and sympathy to its members and ensure that they have love and regard for each other.

Every family must procreate and thereafter properly bringup the children.its  in fact it's legal,social and religious.

Family should properly socialize its members so that they can face the society and life

Optional functions of a family:

  A family is required to perform several optional functions.it is of course left to the family to perform,or not to perform such functions.these are economic, health, educational, cultural and recreational functions.such function are performed by the companies, hospitals, educational institutions,recreation and clubs etc.family is performing the basic functions even today and there is no likehood of its not performing,even in the distant future in india.
