What is a disaster?

Disaster is any man made or natural causes that leads to sudden disruption of normal lives, property, lots of animal lives are lost, and many more things. Man made disasters are disasters that have caused deu to excess use of natural resources that which has led to the imbalance of nature and hence the disaster. Natural disaster on the other hand is entirely dependent on nature. Disasters can be broadly classified into following sub topics:

  1. Hydrological: Floods, Tsunami, Storms, droughts.
  2. Meteorological: Hurricane, Cyclones, Blizzard, heat waves, hailstorm.
  3. Climatologycal: Droughts, Famines, wildfires.
  4. Biological:Epidemic,Pandemics.
  5. Geophysical:  Earthquake, Volcanic eruption, landslides, Tsunami, Mass movements, Subsidence.

If we talk about India specifically, as far as disaster management is concerned, India in the last 20 years has lost 80 million dollars and in 2018 the Indian central government and the state government amounted 210 million rupees towards the drought reliefs as well as to disaster relief funds.

59% of India's land masses are prone to earthquakes of mediocre to high intensity. Around 12% that is over 40 million hectares of land is prone to river and flood erosion. About 5700km of the 7160 km long coastline is prone to tsunamis and cyclones. About 68% of the cultivable area is prone to droughts. Hilly areas are also prone to avalanches as well as landslides.

If we take world into consideration interns of disaster management, the world in 2009 alone has lost 232 billion dollars and India leading the casualty number in 2019 with 1715 deaths. India has also come up with more number of options in order to counter these disasters which are prone to the Indian subcontinent. First of all India has made a central committee that is the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF). India has also opened NDRF that is National Disaster Relief funds which provides funds to states to come back with their relief measures in the disaster areas. Every state in India as of now has State Disaster Response Force, this organisation helps to fight Disaster all over the country and in the particular state.

The budget allocated to NDRF is very low, the facilities are also not up to the mark the quality of training has enhanced in the previous years but still requires more for the long run. And that is why India can reduce the amount that it loses to Disaster and can put that amount somewhere else in some good measures which again turn out to be fruitful.

Thankyou 🌼
