Three Problematic Things Normalised By Pop Culture.

Hello everyone, hope you all are doing fine. I am fine too, but there was this thought that I had in my mind as I re-watched a very good movie yesterday, Thappad. Then I gave a thought that all of this violence around us might be a reason of movies that made it clear that it is normal to be violent against women. And then offcourse there are many other things to talk about but here are three things that are normalised by our pop culture.

1) Love with a dose of violence

So in 2019, Sandeep Reddy Vanga, the writer and director of block buster movie Kabir Singh justified it's violent hero after a slew of criticism. He said he did not value in a relationship, he did not see honesty in a relationship, which lacked the liberty of slapping.

Films and television shows have often depicted domestic violence as a sign of love in romantic relationships, as a sign of passion in romantic relationships. While there may be a happy ending on screen this often isn't the case in real life. Domestic violence was amongst the top crimes against women in 2019. And severity has only worsened during the COVID-19 lockdown.

As shown by a spike in complaints to the national commission for women in 2020 scenes that glorify violence against women can also find their way into popular memes which would trivialise the issue even further.

2) Love, but conditions applied

Popular culture has often peddled the view that a women with spectacles , or a women who is tomboyish, or women who isn't slim is not worthy of love. Unless offcourse ahe gets a makeover. This perpetuates unhealthy beauty standards and can lead people to feel unworthy, inadequate and self-loathing.

3) Love, but stalk till she talks

Stalking has been normalised in pop culture for a really long time now. It is been seen as an acceptable way to woo a women in pop culture. But in reality stalkers can injure women who tend to reject them. In 2018, a stalking case was reported in every 55 minutes in India. But the glorification of stalking can give the idea that relentlessly pursuing a women will lead to her warming up to her stalker.

Watching a movie of your choice is your right, no doubt. But applying things or values that you watch is so much important and should always be given a second thought. There are movies which depict such scene just to educate us, but if you take it the other way would cause a lot trouble.

Thankyou🌼
