Role Of Social Media In Our Society

As we all are well known with what social media is and what it has done to humanity in the past years that it ha emerged, I thought it would be a good topic to talk about in here today. Especially in the times of COVID social media played a crucial role considering that was the only thing majority of people around the world invested their time into.

Social media is a platform which consists of different platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat and other which have proven to be a double escort for the Indian economy and the Indian people. On one hand it provides us with vital information even before the newspaper publish it and on the other hand it poses some challenges which are directly impacting our democracy and at the same time the lives of our citizens.

A very crucial and kind of easy benefit that anyone could talk about the benefits of social media that is the connection that is formed not just within our territory but also around the world. But the most important benefit is, that it provides us with new opportunities. Now a common man with the help of a cell phone and good internet connection can go on a global platform and show his/her talents that might not have been appreciated on a local scale. This allows a person to come at an international stage an compete at an international level. Because of its being cheap several people have used YouTube as a platform for their livelihood. Common man can have direct connection with the government via Twitter by tagging the Railways or any government official for sending them a clear message of what they want to convey.

There are two most important challenges to overcome. First is the hate speech an d crime. Social media has become an important reason for many acts, riots, fights and crucial changes in the society. This all is caused due to the fake news that is spreading around a good example of this would be the Delhi riots that took place in 2020. Microsoft once conducted a research in which it was found that almost 64% of Indians encounter fake news on a daily basis and no doubt this number is increasing everyday. The second thing is online trolling, which has come up in this new era of social networking and digitalization.

New byproducts of social media are coming into the market. The antisocial elements of the society and the people who believe in those antisocial activities threaten people via social media using different videos and images. This not only harms an individual but also the very core of our democratic society and the constitution.

Thankyou🌼
