Loving A Language!
It’s hard to get on with a language without loving it. There has to be a certain motivation which drives you to get into its depths. If you have not yet begun with learning any, you are in a good position; since you can choose your own language to start off!Learning a language will surely connect you to a fascinating new world. For me, German football was a huge reason for learning German. Thanks to German, I can understand what the players and coaches want to say – translations cannot be trusted everytime! You may have something similar in mind. For example – Learning Korean if you are a fan of K-pop.
If you are already learning a language, enjoy it. If not, you can reflect on why you are not enjoying as much as you did before. There surely must have been a reason why you started learning it. Once you rediscover it, the language at hand will seem friendly again.
If you are finding one language difficult, try some other one. Who knows, a certain one may fit you! For those who don’t have an interest for languages, they can just focus on the language in hand. After all, it’s just one language among thousands in the world. Therefore, I’d say:
Learn the language that you love OR Love the language that you learn!
LEARNING, RATHER THAN JUST STUDYING
If you’re similar to me – You don’t like the word studying (especially for exams, nope!), then just call it learning. Learning is surely the better word, for it also involves gaining some valuable experience. For that, language needs to be looked at from a different perspective.
For example – One tiring aspect for many people in a language is its grammar. There are many rules and exceptions to be memorized in order to make the language sound more ‘correct’. However, that shouldn’t demotivate you at all. Grammar is just the way in which a language behaves. Each language has a different type of behaviour. It’s just like having to deal with various types of people in life! A bit of hope for you: Languages are not as unpredictable as people! This approach of learning applies everywhere, but more so for language. It is because you cannot separate language from your life. This point is the major one, with regard to techniques.
If your mother tongue is your parent, the other tongues are just the other people. You can call the other languages your distant relatives, friends, partners or anything else that you wish. Essentially, living a language is making it yours. For that, you can do anything to establish a bond with it.
e.g. You can surround yourself with anime and Japanese things to make you remember the language. For Spanish, you could listen to the world famous Lionel Messi (plus get to know more about him, since he barely speaks in English). Some of you may even style your hair like the K-pop idols, but this one is not mandatory!
