"....let me not forget for a moment, let me carry the pangs of this sorrow in my dreams and in my wakeful hours."
- Gitanjali 79.
Gitanjali 79 has a different rhythm compared to other poems of Rabindranath Tagore. The above lines that have been repeated are a word to his soul that he should hold on to what he has missed and remember God day and night. In the book the psalm of David, we find these lines similar to Tagore's thoughts, "Evening, and morning, and at noon, will I a pray, and cry aloud: and he shall hear my voice." The overall perspective of this poem is that Tagore missed the sight of God that let him feel empty even when he holds a hand full of wealth. This made him remember that his journey is still to be resumed later his pray ends by stating that he needs God and desires to invite him to his life. In the book of Bhagavad Gita, Lord Krishna narrates to Arjuna about the nature of the body, what it is made up of and what is the purpose of the body, in an indirect way that our body is where God dwells. In the Bible and in the Quran we have a similar concept of this from a different point of view. So, Rabindranath Tagore is inviting god in him.
#Missed sight:
Cupid left Psyche in the palace of Venus with anger. Psyche serves Venus, the goddess of love. During this period, Psyche missed her husband and hoped for his sight. This missing period is similar to Tagore's long to see God, whom he loved the most. Psyche lost her beauty and became pale by longing more for the sight of cupid at least once. Tagore wants to see God at least once in his life. If not that, be missing forever.
In Bible Psalms 31:22, David also waited for God's sight and prayed to God, 'I have been cut off from before Thine eyes,'
George Herbert's poem Collar talks about a priest who struggled for his freedom from religious belief.
"But as I raved and grew more fierce and wild
At every word,
Methought, I heard one calling, Child!
And I replied My Lord."
- Collar.
George has explained that no matter the battles priest have been going through in his life. He is just waiting for God's voice to call him his child. In Bible, every character of the New testament people who obey God's words and does their duty is said to be God's child while on the other hand, the person who meditate on God day and night and does what is righteous in God's eyes then God will call them as his child. His longingness for God's voice has shown in this poem. The greatest reward for the priest is hearing God calling them as a child. In the same way, Rabindranath Tagore longed for God's sight.
#Emptiness in wealth :
The Novel "Half Girlfriend" written by Chetan Bhagat, has the character known as Riya, who was born in a high-class society and married to a rich man in London. Yet, she felt empty as she wanted to stand on her legs and her wealth was nothing before her passion. Similarly, in the poem Gitanjali, Tagore felt empty in his heart even though he earned much. He felt nothing great before God.
In the play Harvest, Manjula Padmanabhan built two characters who have the same lifestyle Jaya and Jaideep, who had everything they wanted but felt emptiness at the end when everyone left them.
"she is looking worn out."
- Part 1, Act 3, scene 2.
"he is looking worn out."
- Part 2, Act 3, Scene 2.
These lines from Harvest explain their emptiness. They got all the wealth they longed for but lost all their family members.
And similarly, in the Quran Dawud talks to god and says, "The Taurat of your mouth is better to me than thousands of pieces of gold and silver." in zabur 119: 72.
#Trauma Tired:
"Sick on my journey
only my dreams will wander
these desolate moors "
- Death poem.
Matsuo Basho's poem 'Death Poem' states the tiredness of his life journey where he feels sick and has no way to escape it. Similarly, Tagore felt tired and rested but, he also remembered his voyage was still in process.
Prabir Gayen's poem 'Inner Journey' talks about the soul with emotions. As it says, "Inner Journey is deep emptiness " Rabindranath had a soul journey and an emotional journey where he felt empty in his heart as he was tired of all earthly traumas.
"Light and dark, at all times;
that there are no destinations
Apart from this"
- Journey to the Interior.
These poetic lines extracted from Marget Atwood, 'Journey to the Interior' bring the picture of a life, which is not prospective, yet to be traveled. In the same way, Rabindranath was not aware of his lifestyle but, he knows it is still to Last.
Journey to heaven [Mahaprasthanika Parva] by Pandavas in the story of Mahabaratha where they travel to heaven sent down to hell for their sins and back to heaven. It is also a part of a journey that Rabindranath Tagore says, "when I spread my bed low in the dust," he referred to the earth as the place which has filled with dust or the death which he calls a low bed. This is the journey to heaven that he has to rest on the low bed for a while.
#Crowded loneliness:
In Hindu Mythology, the story of Nala and Damayanthi explains to us the loneliness of Damayanthi. A wedding feast is in the process that has to be celebrated by her. Unsure whether Nala was alive, Damayanti asserted that she would marry again within a day. She did this as a test to sketch Nala out of hiding. Tagore's room accomplishes by decorations, and people in the room laugh and played music. Rabindranath had a feast scenario in his house but felt the loneliness in his heart that he was not invited God to his house like Damayanti was unable to invite her love, Nala to her wedding.
The poem 'The Rime of the Ancient Mariner' Addresses the loneliness of a wedding guest at a wedding feast who heard the wild story of an old Mariner.
"O Wedding-Guest! this soul hath been
Alone on a wide wide sea:
So lonely 'twas, that God himself"
- Samuel Taylor Coleridge.
Hearing the mariner's story, the wedding Guest got into his thoughts and felt the loneliness during a wedding celebration as he is not alone but felt that loneliness in his heart.
Rabindranath Tagore's Gitanjali 79 talks about a Divine prayer to God which holds the four different emotions of a person.
This poem is a soulful prayer that Rabindranath Tagore expressed to his readers as a song offering to God.
The missed sight of God, Holds wealth but feels empty in his heart, Tired of world trauma and last Feeling lonely even in a delighted room.
