Master Oogway battles General Kai, a spirit warrior yak in the Spirit Realm who has vanquished all the other kung fu masters that have passed away and taken their chi. Before Oogway's own chi is taken, he tells Kai that someone is going to stop him. After returning to the Mortal Realm with the chi he stole, Kai is furious to see that Oogway has vanished from history and vows to destroy his legacy.

In the meantime, Master Shifu picks Po as his successor and declares his retirement from teaching. After Po accidentally hurts the Furious Five during his initial teaching attempts, Shifu—who foresaw the catastrophe—advises Po to strive to be less like Shifu and more like himself. Dejected, Po goes back to his house and meets Li Shan, a panda who promptly reveals himself to be Po's biological father. Li Shan came in search of Po when he received a sign from the universe that his son was still alive. To Mr. Ping, Po's adoptive father,'s dismay and jealousy, the two instantly click.

Li is introduced to Shifu and the Five by Po, who then teams up with the Five to protect the Valley of Peace from Kai's jade zombies, or "jombies" as Po calls them—the skeletal remnants of kung fu masters whose chi was stolen. Through investigation, the gang discovers that Kai and Oogway were formerly brothers-in-arms and that, after being ambushed, Kai saved Oogway's life by bringing him to a hidden panda settlement to receive healing. Oogway was taught to give chi by the pandas, but Kai discovered how to take chi from others for his own power. As a result, Oogway was forced to combat Kai and banished him to the Spirit Realm.While Shifu and the Five are getting ready to defend the Valley, Li offers to take Po to the village to learn chi and defeat Kai. In an attempt to put distance between Po and Li, Mr. Ping stows away but is quickly found out. Li won't teach Po Chi anything in the village until he has mastered the laid-back way of life of a panda.

In an attempt to obliterate Oogway's legacy, Kai takes the chi from all surviving kung fu masters, transforming them into zombies in the process. He then tosses Oogway's statue into the Jade Palace, destroying it. The lone survivor, Tigress, finds Po and informs him of what transpired. Li admits that he lied about understanding chi out of fear of losing his kid once more when Po demands that Li teach him how to utilize chi right away. Mr. Ping, who has apologized, offers Li his condolences and promises that Po would forgive him. Hurt by his father's misguided actions, Po rejects Li and trains by himself to overcome Kai.
