A giant panda named Po Ping assists his goose father in running their noodle restaurant in the Valley of Peace, an ancient Chinese land inhabited by anthropomorphic animals. However, Po Ping has aspirations of fighting alongside the Furious Five, a group of kung fu masters who reside in the Jade Palace and are trained by Master Shifu, a grumpy red panda. The Furious Five are Tigress, Monkey, Crane, Viper, and Mantis.
The founder of kung fu, the wise tortoise Master Oogway, foretells that one day Tai Lung, the snow leopard, who was once Shifu's protégé, will break out of prison and attack the Valley in search of the Dragon Scroll, a legendary artifact that, according to legend, will grant its reader unbounded power—something he was previously denied. Worried, Shifu dispatches a subordinate called Zeng to increase the number of guards and strengthen security at Tai Lung's detention facility, Chorh-Gom Prison.
Po arrives too late to enter the arena when Shifu organizes a competition for the Five in order for Oogway to find the Dragon Warrior, the hero who has been predicted to be worthy of reading the Scroll. He unintentionally pushes himself into the middle of the competition off a chair pushed by explosives out of desperation to see his idols. To the surprise of both Po and the Masters, Oogway declares Po the Dragon Warrior after the locals thought Po had fallen from the sky in a fireball.
Po mulls with retiring after Shifu dismisses Oogway's decision as an accident and the Five accept it. But after getting support from Oogway, he perseveres through a disgruntled Shifu's rigorous training and eventually wins the Five over with his fortitude, culinary prowess, and good humor. At this point, Tigress tells him that Shifu's aloof demeanor is due to his guilt over Tai Lung's treachery, having reared him since birth, and being refused the dragon scroll (because Oogway detected something was amiss in his heart).
Zeng's warnings are disregarded at Chorh-Gom Prison; Tai Lung makes a clean getaway, defeating his guards before Zeng is sent back. Shifu tells Oogway, who, before riding up into the Spirit Realm in a flood of peach blossoms, promises Shifu that she will believe in Po as the Dragon Warrior. Shifu tells Po and the Five of Oogway's demise and Tai Lung's escape, and he assures Po that he is the only one who can stop him.
Shocked by this audacious plan and Oogway's demise, Po tries to flee, but Shifu stops him. When Shifu questions Po about his decision to stay, Po replies that he detested who he was and that, in spite of Shifu's severe treatment, he still had faith in Shifu's ability to transform him. After that, Po forces Shifu to acknowledge that he has no idea how to teach him to become the Dragon Warrior. After learning of this, Tigress rallies the Five to launch a covert operation to stop Tai Lung.
