After a series of cop murders, a black cop goes in search of a mysterious gang of masked men who have declared war on the system that protects a deadly drug lord.
Lokesh Kanagaraj brings together the spy worlds of Kamal Haasan's 1986 film Vikram and his own 2019 film Kaithi. Vikram's action -packed world of drug lords and cops. It's a predictable action movie, concerned with expanding space without actually diving into it. It has the mystery of a spy movie and offers some action-movie thrills, but it's not entirely satisfying, leaving behind the adrenaline rush that a movie with such lofty ambitions promises. begins with Karnan (Kamal Haasan), the father of martyred police officer Prapanchan (Kalidas Jayaram), being killed. Knowing that there have been many such killings, a group of masked men claim responsibility and call their war on the system. And begin digging into Karnan's life. The main suspect is Sandanam (Vijay Sethupathi) , a fearsome drug lord with a large family, looking for a shipment of raw materials that can make him a king. Amar on the other hand, is confused by many versions of Karnan. Was he an alcoholic father mourning the loss of his son, a womanizer, or more ? More importantly, was he dead or alive? Vikram works best in the first half, When Amar and his team try to figure out the murder and track down the killer. Kamal Haasan rarely appears in these parts , but his presence is always felt, both as a character and as a actor. From Nayakan to Anbe Sivam, Kamal's work has nods and small thrills to discover. Actors in action star mode here also get a whistle-worthy moment that leads to a break. And Vijay Sethupathi seems to pick up where he left off in Master, playing a ruthless villain. But once the easily guessable mystery surrounding Karnan is unraveled, the story gets pretty direct. A small police force must face an army of gangsters. Similar to what you get with Kaithi, but less effective here . To his credit , Lokesh tries to create an emotional undercurrent with a subplot involving Karnan and Prapanchan's baby, but it dosen't touch it enough. is also predictable. While Vijay Sethupathi tries too hard, Fahadh's Amar is more or less canceled. Narain as Bejoy, Kaithi's honest cop, is also neglected. Even Suriya's widely acclaimed cameo appearance, which serves as the setup for the next installment of the Lokesh Kanagaraj universe, is a bit of a disappointment. The action scenes are tightly choreographed but never rushed. But in action hero movies, the moments of greatest mass come in scenes involving a female character ( a maid/spy played by Vasanti) and her stunts . we needed more moments like this for Vikram to become a reality.
