The fan or punkah as we call it has been present in India for centuries, during British rule, it used to be a fan that was fixed to the ceiling that was rotated by a person called the punkahwallah.

Our homes feel incomplete without a fan, the changing weather conditions has made the ceiling fan a necessity and an indispensable part of our daily lives.

There are many alternatives available to keep us cool during the summer season, the table fan, pedestal fan, air cooler and the air conditioner.

We can view the fan as an irreplaceable part of our daily lives, nowadays fans can be found with different designs and features that make it a good choice during the summer months although most people prefer the air conditioner.

The question is why do we use the ceiling fan, here are some reasons why they are here to stay:

  1. Maintenance: it does not matter whether it is a ceiling fan or a table fan, they are easier to clean when compared to an air conditioner where the cleanup process is complicated.

2. Technology: there are smart fans available that work at high speed and consume less electricity as compared to an air conditioner which makes it an economical choice for the individual.

3. Purpose: fans work by circulation of the air present in the room whereas the air conditioner can be adjusted to a particular temperature that keeps the air cool, it depends upon weather conditions, in the summer season, it makes sense to use an air conditioner.

4. Environment friendly: fans work on electricity, unlike the air conditioner they do not contribute to environmental pollution and studies have shown that the quality of air that we breathe is better.

5. Flexibility: we have table fans and pedestal fans that can be moved around from one location to another depending upon where we need it, unlike the air conditioner which is in a fixed location.

6. Efficiency: although fans are not an as effective as air conditioner for a large room, they are a good option because it increases the rate of evaporation and in the process helps you to remain cool and maintain body temperature.

7. Ventilation: fans work on the principle of circulation of air, one can keep the window open and let in fresh air whereas we need to keep the window closed in order to maintain the temperature in the room while using the air conditioner , as a result we breathe the same air which was already present in the room.

8. Suitability: fans are an appliance that can be used during the summer as well as the winter season whereas an air conditioner works best during the summer season.

9. Health: Fans are good for health because we breathe fresh air whereas use of air conditioner can have a negative impact on our health and lead to respiratory problems such as asthma and allergic reaction due to breathing the same air over a period of time.

In the end, a fan is an appliance that moves without going anywhere, it keeps us cool, it is convenient and easy to use which makes it a have appliance in every household that will continue to be used in the years to come.

Fans are easy and cheap circulating machines, whereas air conditioners are costly complex machines. Fans will always be preferred more than ACs, nice informative blog.
