Sleep Well : Stay Energized, Achieve Success

Sleep is described as a state of relaxation during which an individual is in a state of physical inactivity and is not aware of what is happening all around them.

Studies have found that more than ninety percent of Indians do not get enough number of hours of sleep and the majority, think that they do not suffer from getting insufficient sleep.

Poor sleeping habits has its consequences, it causes lack of concentration, getting angry and irritated easily, getting worried about small things, that prevent your immune system from functioning normally.

Most of us do not realize that how you spend your time during the day, has a direct effect on the quality and quantity of sleep that we get at night.

Here are some of the activities that we can do during the day, that will help us to sleep soundly at night:

a) Regardless of the lifestyle that you lead, keeping aside some time for mental and physical exercise, helps to keep you active and improve your well being, as well as, getting a good night's sleep.

b) The amount of time that we spend watching the television, smartphone and tablets, acts as a major deterrent to sleeping well, this can be avoided by restricting the amount of time that you spend in front of a screen.

c) Most of us cannot leave our work at the office, we tend to check our laptops to see the status of what we are working on, this has become a serious problem especially after the pandemic, where work from home makes us focus on work all the time and interferes with getting some much needed rest.

d) If you want to sleep soundly, then you need to stop eating snacks and beverages such as chocolate, biscuits, chips, tea and coffee, as these are foods that stimulates the mind, keep you awake and make it difficult to fall asleep.

e) Research has shown that spending a limited amount of time in the sun, helps to keep our body in order, a consistent schedule needs to followed, where you wake up at a specific time, this will help keep your body tuned to your sleep requirements.

f) We need to reduce the time spent using LED light bulbs, this is unavoidable but necessary,  if we cut down on the number of that we make use of these lightbulbs, as it interferes with the body's requirements of melatonin, a hormone that makes us feel sleepy.

g)Due to our hectic schedule, most of us are in the habit of eating our lunch or dinner in a hurry and then going to bed, this is bad for health, it affects digestion and prevents you from sleeping well. If you want to avoid this, then it would be a good idea to maintain a gap between your last meal and when you to sleep, this will improve digestion and allow you to get a good night's sleep.

To sum up, sleep is something that we cannot live without, it is needed for the improved and proper functioning of mind and body, keeps you energetic and enables one to lead a successful life.
