Due to the long work hours and commuting, I find it very difficult to watch the TV, the smartphone has become my companion and YouTube is my source of entertainment.

I like to browse through what is available, I typed old comedy shows, there was something called Mind Your Language, a British sitcom that caught my attention.

There was something about the description and the reviews that was different, so I decided to give it a try and found that it was really funny and some of the situations shown were something that we could relate to in our daily lives.

It is about a group of students who come from all over the world to study English and how their interactions leads to misunderstanding due to differences of opinion.

The series tries to represent different countries, mostly immigrants who were there during the time that the show was made, these include, India, Pakistan, Japan, China,Italy, Spain, Greece, Sweden etc. a mix of Asians and Europeans.

What makes the series unique is how people from different cultures and countries react to each other in a classroom, they have fixed ideas and are quick to form an opinion which leads to conflict and awkward situation.

Some people claim that the show is offensive as it depicts views that show cultures in a negative light, the reality is that it is not meant to be taken seriously and if you view the jokes with an open mind then you will really enjoy it.

One of the best episodes is called a fate worse than death where Ranjeet the Indian student is supposed to get married which is decided in advance by his parents, the girl and her father come to Britain so that they can get married but he is not interested.

Another funny episode is the one about shoplifting where Jamila the Indian housewife misunderstood the meaning of free promotion of products for sale in the supermarket and was caught with the stolen things and was taken to jail.

The episode that I like most is called After three, the students have to come to class dressed in what they would normally wear in their native country and they would have to participate in a contest where they would be judged on the basis of their abilities.

It is interesting to note that this show was so popular that it has been broadcast and remade in multiple countries in the local language including India where it was called Zabaan Sambhalke.

Nowadays, you will not find this type of tv show because we have to watch what we say, in order to avoid offending others, this is exactly why this show was so funny because most of the jokes were based on how we perceive others.

The show is old but we can still watch it today, because it shows the challenges and difficulties that immigrants face when they are in a new country and how daily interaction can have unintended consequences.

A comedy of errors
A unique situation comedy
