Cartoons have the ability to bring drawings to life and are able to convey a story to its viewers. It gives voice to non living things that we use in everyday life as well as animals, birds, insects and other living things in a way that it appears to be real and talk to the viewer , the best part is that we can relate to  it and it can be watched by everyone.

The earliest memories that I have of watching television was of watching cartoon shows, in fact I have watched so many cartoons shows that I have lost count of them and they are unfortunately a part of my childhood that will never come back.

Being part of the pre millennial generation, I used to watch cartoons on television channels, the internet was yet to come, so I watched mostly the classics such as Tom and Jerry, Woody Woodpecker, Disney cartoons including Mickey mouse, Donald duck, Goofy, Duck tales, comic book cartoons like Spiderman, Batman, Superman, the incredible Hulk and the list goes on.

At the time, cable tv had just arrived and cartoon network was the most famous cartoon channel unlike the variety of cartoon tv channels that are available today.

Another major difference between then and now was the availability of animated movies which made widespread use of computer generated images that were more realistic and fun to watch such as toy story, lion king, Aladdin etc. that blurred the difference between fantasy and reality.

Here are some fun facts about cartoons that includes both psychology and entertainment:

A) The best time of your life during childhood, it is a phase when we are eager to learn, play, have fun and enjoy, this gradually changes as we grow older, we become serious and lose our sense of humour.

B) When we watch cartoons, it keeps us entertained and has a positive psychological effect because we can identify with the characters, for example Tom and Jerry is based on a simple theme of cat and mouse, yet it is so much fun to see Jerry the mouse outwit the much bigger and stronger opponent at every opportunity he gets.

C) Good cartoons are not just about humour, they help us to be creative and think out of the box, regardless of the cartoons that you watch, it enables us to bring our dreams to life with color, background music and a sense of discovery that can happen only in the world of cartoons.

D) We love to watch cartoon characters such as Iron Man, Captain America, The Incredible Hulk etc.  not just because it is fun, from the psychological viewpoint, having superpowers gives them the advantage to overcome difficult situations which is not possible in real life.

E) Cartoons also helps us to learn something new while having fun, it can be described as edutainment, although cartoons like Mickey mouse and Tom and Jerry are nearly eighty years old, they have lessons that we can learn that are applicable even in today's world.

Finally, cartoons can be watched by people of all ages, they help us to relax, gives us a chance to laugh out loud,keeps us in a light hearted and happy and reminds us of the bright side of life and to have a good time while it lasts.
