With increase in waste management discussions around the world and its catastrophic impact on climate I had an urge to know which is the cleanest city of India.
Do you know which is the cleanest city of India ?
Do you even know how much waste India generates in a year?
You all will be surprised to know that Indore is crowned the title of cleanest city for consecutive 4 years. It is the most populated city of Madhya Pradesh yet the cleanest .
The list of cleanest cities is published annually by Ministry of Urban Development , Government of India and Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) of India under the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan campaign which was started on 2nd October 2014 on birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi which aims to eliminate open defecation and improve solid waste management.
Now talking about why Indore is ranked as the cleanest city in India all thanks to its planned waste segregation, conversion and disposal. No untidy scattered garbage, open sewers and other unsanitary conditions is likely to spoil the view when you decide to visit and explore the city's tourist destinations. This is all because of the practice of waste segregation adopted by people at home ,they separate the waste and make separate bins for dry, wet and hazardous waste (such as sanitary napkins and diapers etc.) also people do not litter in public places they carry with themselves a small dustbin in their car and throw garbage in it.
A “dustbin free initiative” was also taken up in which door to door collection of garbage was done and the purpose behind this was that they did not wanted to place garbage bins on street because when they do so stray dogs usually loiter around them in search of food which in turn makes the surroundings filthy.
Another initiative taken up by the Government to make bigger and wider impact of campaign was that children were made brand ambassador of the cleanliness and various committees have been constituted in schools and colleges to ensure cleanliness in neighbourhood and create awareness among children as they are future of India and it all depends on them.
This initiative was also adopted by many other cities like Ghaziabad and Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh and Ahmedabad in Gujarat to deal with garbage hazard.
This all was possible only due to collective efforts of people of Indore. One should learn from the model adopted by them otherwise waste management will become difficult and uncontrollable if not treated now as India generates 62 million tonnes of waste each year and it is increasing each year.
