According to an official statement released by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Monday, Jasprit Bumrah has been declared formally ineligible to compete in the T20 World Cup due to a back injury. Bumrah's injury is a huge setback for India after all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja's exclusion from the T20 World Cup squad as well. The board added in the statement that a replacement will be announced "soon."
"Fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah of Team India has been disqualified from the ICC Men's T20 World Cup roster by the BCCI medical staff. After careful consideration and consultation with the experts, the choice was made. Due to a back injury, Bumrah was initially unable to play in the current Mastercard 3-match T20I series against South Africa "Read the declaration.
After complaining of back pain on the morning of the first T20I, Bumrah was forced to withdraw from India's current series against South Africa. After that, news broke that the 28-year-old will not be participating in the T20 World Cup at all. However, both BCCI president Sourav Ganguly and India head coach Rahul Dravid declined to fully disqualify him.
Bumrah and Harshal Patel were undergoing rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru at the time. Bumrah had previously missed the Asia Cup for a comparable reason.
The premier bowler was selected for the home T20I series against Australia and South Africa after making a full recovery. Bumrah, however, only played in one of the three T20Is against Australia before being injured right before the South Africa series.
This is not the first time Bumrah or India have suffered from a back problem. The pacer has previously experienced similar problems as a result of his unconventional front-on slinging motion, which specialists feel puts pressure on his back.
Contrarily, Harshal has appeared in both the Australian and South African series, and if all works out, we'll get to watch the death over expert in action in Australia.
Mohammed Shami, who will be travelling with the team as a reserve, might take Bumrah's place given his background. Shami was a part of the Australia series but was forced to sit out after testing positive for Covid-19. Shami has not played in a single T20I match since the World Cup last year. Prior to the T20Is against South Africa, he was unable to recover from the virus. However, he has since tested negative and was observed bowling aggressively in the nets.
