Bhutan is a country that replaced gross domestic product (GDP)with gross national happiness (GNH). The concept was invented by King jigme singye wangchuk in 1974. He decided that his country's wealth should be measured by the happiness of his people as opposed to materialistic possession and money. Gross National happiness is derived from Buddhist values that aims at putting forward the people's quality of life and focussing at their material and spiritual development.This is the only country with an official ministry of happiness and it's even in their constitution.
Bhutan has consistently been ranked number one in Asia in the Happiness index and top ten in the world. Gross National happiness is measured by four pillars and they are sustainable development, environmental protection, preservation of culture such as wearing the national dress and good governance. The country is covered by 72% forests and the forest cover is further expanding as opposed to other countries where they are decreasing at an alarming rate. They produce more carbon dioxide than they consume thus making Bhutan the only carbon negative country in the world. Endangered species like the Bengal tiger, snow leopard and rhino have found peace in Bhutan. Hunting any kind of animal in Bhutan can land one behind the bars for life.
Bhutan is nota a rich country and yet there are no beggars in Bhutan nor a homeless people. If someone loses their home, they can appeal to king and their king gives them a new home and new piece of land to farm. Bhutan is the only country in the world that has made cigarettes illegal. The state sponsors education till 10th standard and higher education is given only by merit. Kids are taught the local language along with English , so that kids stay rooted and at the same time not be left behind internationally. They are also working on becoming 100% organic by removing pesticides and fertilizers.
Their constitution guarantees free essential healthcare to all it's citizens including tourists. But earlier tourism in Bhutan was not allowed it began in 1974. Till 1999 television and internet was banned in Bhutan. Bhutan's prime minister is a doctor and despite being a prime minister he still practices as a doctor on Saturday's and see patients.
A country's hapiness is not determined by how much wealth they possess infact it depends on how sustainably they are living, how less is the economic disparity, how are they governed .
