If you ask me what is the one anime I will recommend to people who don't enjoy watching anime or wants to start, I will always recommend them this anime, that is Death Note. and why do I say this I will tell all about it by giving my honest review about this anime and what is the interesting factor about it. Lets start with the all the details. This anime was adapted from Japanese manga(Comics) of the same name Death Note.
This anime series was aired in Japan in its original language Japanese. It aired in year 2006.

A high School boy Light Yagami an extremely talented and brilliant students discovers a Notebook falling on the ground. He picks it up looks at it, and on the top of it ots Written DEATH NOTE. when he opens it and looks inside it says if you write someone's name in it that person will die within 5 minutes. In the beginning he takes it as a joke and keeps it with him and for fun, he writes a wanted criminal's name on it and within minutes he dies of heart attack given that he knows that persons real name and has seen their face. He finds this very amusing and thinks of how he can make a better world with the help of this Death Note. The Death Note has it's own rules and regulations as well. And their after comes the Shinigami - Ryuk( God of Death) the real owner of the Death Note. He stays with Light all the time. He kills and kills people continuously to am extent that government has to take actions on how is this happening. And then comes our another brilliant character that is L-Who solves all kind of mystery, one of his kind he is one of the best in his field. And now the story of Cat and mouse chase continuously goes on of catching the culprit, who catches whom. There are many more characters in it as well who has important role in this series
Light Yagami- Light Yagami is the main protagonist of the Death Notw series. He is intelligent , top of his class, very respectable, helpful and lawful but after getting the Death Note his view on world changes, He thinks himself of someone who can create a fear in this world.
L/ Ryuzaki- L is a investigator who solves crime, his real name is hidden no one knows his real name that's where story becomes interesting, I don't want to give spoilers cuz you will see for yourself how even after knowing who is behind this unnatural phenomenon, the chase continues.
Misa Amane - Misa Amane is anpther character who also owns a Death Note. She has another power which L doesn't have, She is madly in love with Light, and Light takes advantage of her power to his cause.
Ryuk- Ryuk is the Shinigami ( God of Death) who is always besides Light and only Light can see him. He is an apple lover. From time to time he explains the rules and conditions of using the Death Note to Light.
This series is my favorite and I am sure many people also love this one this is one hell of edgy and dramatic and dark concept. We all start with knowing who is doing what but still will hook you up until the last 37th episode just to know how is it going to end up who is going to get discovered first. The character Light Yagami is so mind blowing that he makes the use of each and every rule in such a way that you will be amazed. He will not for once shift from his original aim of creating a fear in the world.
There are live action version movies and series also, but if you really want to enjoy in the best way I suggest watching the anime.
