Ambergris is a waxy flammable solid and is mostly grey or black in colour. It is formed inside the digestive system of male whale sperm. The word ambergris is originally derived from the French word “ Ambre Gris” which means “ grey amber”. It is often called as gold of the seas. The reason being if the market price for certain weight of ambergris is dollar 3,000,000  then for the same weight the market price of gold is dollar 4,800,000.

Ambergris certain properties makes it so much valuable that people pay million dollars to acquire it. It's property of solubility in various substances such as alcohol, chloroform as well as volatile and stable oil has increased it's demand and value in the market exponentially. Ambergris has a distinct smell and this smell is due to it's chemical component ambrein. Ambrein is further oxidised into two more compounds ambroxide and ambrinol. The use of ambergris is unlimited. It is used as an aphrodisiacs, it is used to enhance the flavour of a food, chocolate, cocktails. Historically ambergris was used in medicines and spices to treat all different kinds of illness. Even Historically ambergris was considered so valuable that the Portuguese took over the Maldives in the sixteenth century just because they had greater access to all the ambergris. Even during the deadliest bubonic plaque pandemic people used ambergris to protect themselves, people carried a piece of ambergris to mask the air , supposedly doing so will stop it's spread through the air.

It is known that ambergris is produced only in the intenstine of a male sperm whale, whose population left is estimated to only be around 3,00,000 to 4,50,000 making it a rare species. While it's difficult to tell with any real certainty from where this ambergris comes out from the body of a male sperm whale. Some scientists are of the opinion that whale vomit this and other are of the opinion that it is expelled in the form of it's poop. Today many high profile brands like D homme, gucci and Channel use it in their perfume in order to make it last longer.

Though there are many instances of it's discovery around the shores of china, Japan, Africa and Australia mostly by fisherman community but the largest chunk of ambergris was discovered in Australia and that weighed whooping one thousand pounds and that's more than the weight of two motorcycles combined.
