India is a home to about more than fifty varieties of fruits. There are some fruits in india that are exclusive to particular states thus making their presence rare. Unlike mangoes, bananas, apples, coconut, grapes they are not locally and readily available and if it's available in your city it's mostly in big super markets. The fruits rare nature makes it more costly than regular fruits and pricing also depends on your location .
1.MANGOSTEN:It is a tropical fruit native to tropical lands surrounding Indian Ocean. It is cultivated only for short period of six to ten weeks due to its seasonal nature. First fruiting takes place from July to October. Thailand is the largest producer and exporter of Mangosten.
In India it is mostly cultivated in limited parts of southern region of kerela, karnataka and Tamil nadu. It's irregular short supply leads to wide price fluctuation. Mangosteen tastes like a delicious mix of lychee, peach, strawberry and pineapple. In southern India it can cost you about 200/kg.It is rich in calcium, potassium and magnesium.
2.GRAPEFRUIT:It i's grown on subtropical citrus tree. China is it's largest producer accounting for nearly 53% of total produce.
The fruit is yellowish-orange in colour and spherical in shape. The colour of its pulp vary from white, pink ,red with red being the sweetest one. It is mostly rich in vitamin C, B6 and potassium .Its price ranges from 300/KG to 690/KG depending on its availability.It i's readily available in Indian markets from November to December.
3.PASSION FRUIT :Brazil accounts for nearly 60% of world production. In India it's mostly cultivated in karnataka and north eastern states. Purple passion fruits are available throughout the year but major seasons of its Availibilty are may-june and sept-oct.
They are generally small and oval in shape and have purple and yellow color. The juicy pulp of this fruit is orange colored with crunchy seeds. It's super sweet in taste and tart. It can cost you 350/KG but when in karnatka this price goes down to 200/KG.
4.RAMBUTAN:It is native to South -East Asia. Thailand is it's largest producer followed by Indonesia and Malaysia. In India it is grown in states like kerela, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra and Kudak region of Karnataka.
Rambutan is hairy red and green shell, quite similar to sea urchin, and when peeled it resembles lychee. It tastes like a mix between a grape and a fresh date. They are generally found in autumn and winter. It is rich in vitamin c, potassium and dietary fibres.It can cost you around 500/KG.
