Costa Concordia was an Italian ship owned by carnival corporating, an American based corporation. Costa Concordia came into service on June 30,2006.It was the largest ship in the Costa line . It's length was around 290 meters and width 35.2 metres. The ship was extremely luxurious. The ship had a two-deck family spa, four swimming pools, one outdoor pool. It also had 1502 cabins, 601 crew cabins and was able to accommodate approximately 4890 passengers.

On 11 January 2012, the ship took off from Cagilari Port for a seven day Mediterranean cruise . On January 13, 2012 it arrived  at the Italian Port of civitavechia. And before sunset the ship turned towards Port Savona.  In order to practice “ sail by salute” the ship's standard course was altered. The original plan was to pass between mainland Italy and a small island called giglio. “ Sail by salute ” is generally done  to provide the passengers with exceptionally good view of the whole Island. For this purpose the ship was kept 1.5 nautical miles away from the island. And after that what followed was series was incredible blunders and poor judgements. 

The whole experience turned into a nightmare for four thousand (4000)  passengers and crew on board. The ship was commanded by Francesco Schettino. According to testimony of the chief officer, the captain had forgotten his glasses in the room and couldn't see the radar clearly. But captain Francesco Schettino defended himself by claiming that he was familiar with the waters and hence didn't need a glass. By the time orders were given by him was executed ,the ship's turning circle grew and the ship deviated from it's planned path and came closer to land and due to this closeness,the ship hit an underwater reef. Due to this collision the Concordia's port suffered a lengthy tear of 70 metres. Soon the water start flooding the ship. Due to flooding the main engine of the ship stopped working and the power went off.

Despite knowing the severity of the situation the captain hid the truth for some hours from both the passengers and safety department.  When he realised the situation was out of control and it need to be informed,it was too late. When the life boat arrived Captain Schettino abondoned the ship and it's passengers and boarded the safety boat and travelled to safety. His indecisiveness and careless attitude resulted in the death of 32 people and injuries of 60 and the distruction of a dollar 617 million ship.
