Socotra Island  is a part of Yemen and is located to the North West side of Indian Ocean between Africa and middle East. The island separated from the mainland of Africa between six and seven million years ago. 

The most striking feature about this island is that it is home to nearly seven hundred (700) endemic species  ; and these species are found nowhere else on the planet. To preserve it's uniqueness from human development ,  the  UN designated it as a UNESCO heritage site. Once you visit this island it will remind you of a alienated place from a science fiction Film.  

The head turning features of this island are the unique and rare varieties of trees found here and these trees are native to this island only.  The world famous “ dragon blood tree ” is found only in Socotra island. Injured bark and branches release red resin and this is the reason why it is called dragon blood tree. This tree looks like a giant upturned mushroom or like an upturned umbrella . The strangeness in it's look is due to it's adaption to Socotra's arid climate. The resin of dragon blood tree possess a lot of goodness and offers a variety of uses. The resin is often used as incense, in treatment of diarrhea,bleeding ulcers, dysentery and fever . Wood of dragon blood tree is used for the manifacture of ropes.Some of the dragon trees found there are as old as 100 years. It is also home to Elephant leg's tree which is one of the strangest species found there.

Apart from plants, 90%  of it's reptile species and 95% of its land snail species are not found  anywhere else in the world. The place is one of the most isolated places and has about 40,000 Bedouin culture live here. They survive mainly by herding and species. Though it's official language is Arabic, but the language mostly spoken on the island is an unwritten socotria language which can only be spoken by people and not written.

It's a mysterious, otherworldly and mesmerizing place. It is a place to connect with nature and to discover it's uniqueness. But until today it's one of the world's hardest-to- reach places. It's a great touristic site but due to the ongoing civil war in Yemen , the tourism on Socotra island has decreased significantly over the past years.
