Know More About The Most Uninhabited Continent: Antarctica

Though Antarctica is larger than Europe and Australia but it remains almost entirely uninhabited. Fortunately due to advancement of Science we are learning more about Antarctica.Antartica is a hub for research rather than commercial projects.

  1. The first human born on the continent was Emilio Marcos Palma who was born at Argentine army's Esperanza base near the tip of the Antarctica on January 7,1978.
  2. An area called dry valley has been no rain for nearly two million years. There is absolutely no precipitation in this region and it makes up 4800 square km region of almost no water,ice or snow.
  3. Antarctica expands in size as it is directly impacted by the cold weather and extreme winds. The ice mass in winter expands an area about 4.5 million square miles to 6.9 million square miles. The land of Antarctica shrinks back when the summer season arrives.
  4. Antarctica is considered closed to space because you can find numerous meteorites in various regions of Antarctica.The meteors in Antarctica are easily preserved due to it's freezing temperatures ,meteors from thousand of years are still intact.
  5.  We normally do not imagine ice and volcanoes existing together but both of these elements exist in abundance in Antarctica.Antartica is home to the largest volcanic region on the earth as it is home to atleast ninety one different volcanoes. There have been no eruptions in Antarctica for more than 2000 years but measuring volcanism in Antarctica is problematic as traditional means of assessing volcanoes are not effective in icy regions.
  6. Though Antarctica appears to be frozen wasteland but actually Antarctica is home to plentiful of natural resources. For example 90% of the world's freshwater Ice and 70% of the total freshwater is stored on Antarctica. It is also believed to contain large mineral deposits primarily copper and is also believed to be Home to large petroleum deposits but due to treaty signed in 1959 no commercial minning is allowed in Antarctica because this continent is home to numerous unique species that might suffer from large scale industry.
  7. Scientists from Sweden have found a fossilized caccoon in Antarctica containing th e world's oldest sperm. This prehistoric cells belong to a class of earthworm s and leeches about 50 million years ago.
