We Indians are obsessed with English and value it more than our mother tongue. Lord Macaulay, is the man who brought the English language and British Education to India around seventeenth century. Even after the end of British rule in the year 1947 ,English remained in use in India.India is the second largest English speaking country in the world with one hundred twenty five million speakers. Before the advent of Britishers Indian mostly spoke Persian, Sanskrit or either their regional language.
English in India has become a social class.English in India has become a parameter to judge others knowledge, intelligence, social status, educational qualification and what not. Some self proclaimed “Grammar Nazi ”looks down upon people who don't know English. To them only knowing and understanding English is not enough, one should must speak fluent English with impeccable pronunciation to qualify as an “elite class ”.In India English is viewed as the standard language of communication. It is rightly said that the more you value your language ,tradition and custom the more it would be valued by others. This is the reason why people speaking Hindi or their regional language are looked down upon not only in English speaking nation but also in India, their homeland. It's true English is considered as a global language and knowing it adds to your personality but it also true one not knowing it shouldn't be ridiculed. As it's rightly said by H. Jackson Brow Junior :
“ Never make fun of someone who speaks broken English, it means they know another language ”.
Developed countries like Japan, Germany, France, Switzerland value their native language the most. They even communicate in their native language for international affairs .I personally think language should be seen as as a bridge to connect different language speaking nations. One should learn different languages in order to lessen the gap between two countries not to belittle others .Whenever we visit a foreign country the reason it is termed as “foreign ” is because of the language they speaki. They are common to us in most of the aspects be it how they look(except colour which I do not value) ,food they eat ,the emotions they feel etc. Once we start understanding what they say we would feel more close to them not alien. One should first learn their language value and respect them even it's not globally spoken and then value other's .One should also try to explore and learn languages other than English.
