Maa kamakhya is known as the goddess of desires. Maa kamakhya temple is located in the western part of guwahati on the neelachal parvat six hundred feet above the plains. The neelachal parvat consists of the Vishnu hill, the Brahma hill and the shiva hill.  Here the people worship the bleeding goddess , there are no sculptures of a god or goddess but a goddess yoni that is vagina is worshipped. It is believed that when lord shiva has taken his wife Sati's dead body on his shoulder and was doing Tandava, at that time Lord Vishnu tried to calm him down with his sudarshan chakra because of which one hundred and eight pieces of maa Sati's body settled in different places. Out of these 108 parts Sati's womb is said to have fallen in kamakhya temple. The architecture of Maa Kamakhya temple is a reflection of two distinct art forms the North Indian style of architecture and the Mughal influence. This confluence has been called as a Neelachal style of architecture.

It is said whatever your heart desires all your desires will be fulfilled once you seek mother's blessings. Devotees from all parts of India and around the world come here to seek her blessings. She is a source of all power and a celebration of female fertility. Devotees who visit the temple come to the soubhagya kund to wash themselves off all their sins and then embarks on the journey towards the temple to worship Maa kamakhya they light incense sticks and diyas. According to kalikapurana when one prays to goddess Kamakhya with pure heart she grants their wishes in no time. On fulfillment of what they seeked at some point of time, when comes true are paid back in forms of offering. The animals that one gets to see in the premises of the temple are reflection of fullfilled wishes. One can see pigeons been sold in pairs, and goats too in pairs waiting to be offered as sacrifice. It is said one obtains hundred fold merits from that worship. Maa kamakhya is Mahamaya herself as she stands on the red Lotus placed on Shiva who is lying on the back of a lion. Maa kamakhya is one and everything in herself. She is the embodiment of the world. She is always upheld by Brahma, Shiva and Vishnu. She is the force that has the power to grant you all that your soul seeks.
