Ahom dynasty was founded by sukapha in 1228 . Sukapha Was a burmeses prince of Ming Mao Kingdom Of Yunan. Ahoms were one Of the longest reigning kingdoms Of  India .The Ahom Kingdom included most of the present day Assam,  and was ruled for 600 years from  tthirteenth century to the  nineteenth century  by  Ahoms .

The name Assam comes from the word ‘ Asama’ meaning “invincible ” which was also a local name for the Ahomes. The Ahoms established their first kingdom in Choraideo. Ahoms were much like ancient Egyptians as they too believed in life after death.  Much like Egyptians they built their version of commerative structures for the dead which was their version of “ pyramids ”. The commemorative structures unlike the pyramids were hemispherical in shape. The  Ahom kings, queens, princes and princesses were buried  along with their possessions in the mitem.

It is said that when Mughal empire was at it's peak , the time when it had captured almost whole of India, there was  still a region out of their control.  The region was present day Assam earlier known as “ Ahom kingdom ”. The Ahom kingdom defeated Mughals seventeen times.  Lachit Borphukam ,the man  behind this victory, is still considered to be one of the greatest Indian war generals.

He didn't celebrate the victory of  winning back guwahati from the mughals. Instead he started planning a counter attack because he estimated that Mughals might  attack them again . It happened  as thought so , Mughals attacked Assam again .This time they returned to Assam with 5000 guns, 15000 archers, 30000 infantry, 1000 canons.  It was impossible for Ahoms  to defeat such a large well prepared army. But this war was between the Mughal's mighty army and Lachit Borphukans strategic thinking and planning. He strategically shifted the battlefield from the plains to the jungles, valleys and even the rivers.  The mighty army and huge number of ammunition of Mughals  turned into weakness in this difficult terrain . Finally the Mughals lost and the Ahoms won once again.

The Lachit Borkphukan is still a celebrated legend. In his honour a gold  medal is awarded to the best cadet from the National Defence Academy. The medal was instituted in 1999 to inspire defense personnel to instill Borkphukan's heroism and sacrifices. There are still a lot of heroes like Lachit Borkphukan who deserves to be in our history textbooks,  for remaining 90% Indians to know about them .
