The Real Story of a Mermaid
One of the earliest mermaid legends appeared in Syria around 1000 BC when the goddess Atargatis dived into a lake to transform into a fish. Since the gods there wouldn't allow her to give up her great beauty, her bottom half became a fish, while she retained her top half in human form.
What City is Known for Mermaids?
Long before Disney World became the hallmark of Florida's tourism industry, there was Weeki Wachee - the City of Live Mermaids. Weeki Wachee has been attracting thousands of roadside visitors and aspiring mermaids from around the world since it opened its doors in 1947.
This state park, spread over 538 acres and home to the deepest naturally formed spring in North America, is best known for its live Mermaid Shows. In these shows, "half-fish, half-human" performers swim and dance in an underwater theatre built 20 feet below the spring's surface.
Weeki Wachee was built by a former Navy man named Newton Perry who invented a new way of breathing underwater and taught it to some girls willing to perform while submerged. It takes rigorous training to become a full-fledged mermaid, and candidates from all over the world, including as far away as Tokyo, come to this Gulf Coast destination with hopes of fulfilling their dreams of becoming a mermaid.
