Our lives largely depend on nature. Plants are a major part of our environment. Plants give us food. Cereals, vegetables and fruits come from plants. Sugar, pulses and oil too are give by plants. Plants supply us wood , fibres, rubber, gum, tea, and coffee. They also supply life giving oxygen. Plants make our world beautiful.
Reproduction helps plants in maintaining their existence in the form of new plants. Plants reproduce in many ways. Most of them reproduce from seeds. Non flowering plants reproduce through spores. Some plants reproduce from other parts of them roots, stems and leaves.
NEW PLANTS FROM SEEDS Most flowering plants grow from seeds. A flower changes into a fruit. Seeds are usually found inside the fruit. They are of different shape and soil.
A PLANT PRODUCES SO MANY SEEDS A plants tries to maintain and multiply its existence on earth in the form of new plants, so it produces so many seeds. Some seeds are not fully grown when they are separated from their parent plants. Some are eaten by animals or destroyed by heat or rain. Others may not get the right soil or enough air and water. In this way, only a few seeds get a chance to grow into new plants.
STRUCTURE OF A SEEDS A seed has an outer covering known as seed coat. It protects the embryo. It has tiny holes to allow water to enter. There are two seed leaves inside the seed coat in garms, peas and beans. Wheat, maize or rice has only one seed leaft. A seed leaf is called a cotyledon. Between seed leaves or inside a seed leaf, there is a baby plant. It is called the embryo. This baby plant has a tiny shoot and tiny root.
GERMINATION OF A SEED When the embryo begins to grow out from a seed, we say the seed has germinated. Germination is the process by which a seed grow into a plant.
A SEEDLING When a seed begins to grow into a new plants, first of all, a white structure begins to grow. It is called the radicle. This is actually the root on the plant. When the root appears from the seed, we say, the seed has germinated. The leaves develop on the shoot after a few days. This young plant is called a seedling. The cotyledon remain attached to young plant.
