As a kid, I thought I had beautiful long, wavy hair! God I miss those days…..
As I got older and had to start taking care of my hair myself. Also the fact that my friends - the fashionistas would make comments and that brought down my confidence, I started wanting straight hair like the girls in the commercials. Remember the Sunsilk curly hair shampoo, I tried that thinking it would help straighten my hair. I know…. I know….. Big mistake…… The shampoo turned my beautiful wavy hair into curly hair.
To solve that issue I thought why don't I cut my hair really short and then the new hair that grows will be straight…. RIGHT!!! Wrong…. my hair ended up being short, even more curly and unmanageable. Having learnt my lesson I let it be and waited for my hair to grow back to the full length. I was also in college by then so I got busy enjoying my new found freedom and stopped bothering about my hair.
As time passed I realized that my hair isnt growing back to its original length (maybe because I cut it every few months), nor was it more manageable. This was the time when permanent straightening was the new in thing. So I did that… YESSSSS! my hair was beautiful again. they were straight, long, manageable and more importantly I could leave the house with open hair and they would not curl up into a huge ball of fluff. Problem - I was always scared to ruin my hair so didnot style them or tie them and always had keep them open and straight….
This joy lasted for 6 months until new curly hair grew and my hair started looking funny - Straight at the ends and curly on the roots… I also for some reason missed my curly hair and felt with the new products in the market I'll be able to manage my hair easily and it wouldn't be an issue styling my natural hair - straight or curly or wavy - it could be what ever I wanted it to be. So I had two choices either go for a touchup or grow my natural hair out. I decided to go with the latter. I grew my hair out and cut out the straight hair. Saw a lot of videos on youtube, brought styling products and 3 in 1 hair styling iron.
Its been a few years now… I still have curly, fluffy, short unmanageble hair. I have tried everything from combing my hair while in the shower and applying various gels, deep conditioning, egg yolks and egg whites, different shampoos and conditioners.
Any suggestions on what I can do to help my damaged curls?
