The five-day Diwali festival begins on Dhanteras. People purchase jewelry or kitchenware and offer prayers to God on Dhanteras. It is known as Naraka Chaturdashi, the second day. It signifies the demon king "Narakasura's" demise. Another name for it is Chhoti Diwali, or Little Diwali. An intriguing proverb states that anyone who skip out on their bath on this day are said to go to hell.

They adorned their windows and doors with flowers and mango leaves. The purpose of setting off firecrackers is to ward off evil spirits. Everybody dresses in new attire on Diwali, and they all enjoy snacks and sweets with friends and family.

An Indian festival of lights is called Deepavali, or Diwali. Deepavali refers to rows of lights, while "Deepa" means lamp or light and "Vali" means string or row. It honors the triumph of good over evil. Usually in the months of October or November, Diwali falls on the day of "Amavasyaa," or no moon day. Diwali is celebrated on a different date each year, determined by the motion of the moon. One of the biggest holidays of the year for Hindus is Diwali, which is observed by families in their homes with customary rituals. It is one among India's largest celebrations.

In Sanskrit, the word "Deepavali" means "row of lights." Lights, candles, firecrackers, and diya (clay lamps) are lit during celebrations to represent the triumph of knowledge over ignorance, inner light over spiritual darkness, and good over evil. Diwali is a time to celebrate life, spend time with loved ones, and resolve to make the best choices you can.

India's largest and most significant holiday of the year is Diwali, also known as Dipawali. The row (avali) of clay lamps (deepa) that Indians light outside their homes to represent the inner light that guards against spiritual darkness is the source of the festival's name. For Hindus, this event holds the same significance that the Christmas holiday does for Christians.Over the ages, non-Hindu cultures have learned to appreciate Diwali as a national holiday.

Another significant Jain celebration is Diwali. The event honors the Jain community's understanding of and release (moksha) from the cycle of life and death (samsara) of Mahavira, the most recent Jain Tirthankara. The lamps are lit to commemorate the illumination of Mahavira's sacred wisdom.
In Sikhism, Diwali is commemorated since the 18th century as the occasion of Guru Hargobind's return to Amritsar from his imprisonment in Gwalior, which is compared to Rama's return to Ayodhya. To mark the event, Amritsar residents ignite lamps all around the city.
Diwali is observed by some Buddhists as a remembrance of the day Emperor Ashoka converted to Buddhism in the third century bce, despite not being a major Buddhist holiday.
