3. The Origin of Ayurveda and Yoga

Ayurveda, which is frequently dated to be roughly 5,000 years old, developed during the time of the Vedas as a holistic medical system. The Vedas contain documentation of medical knowledge passed down from gods to sages to doctors and healers, including significant discussion of plants and medications. Asana practice as a physical component of the yoga path first emerges in the 11th century. Hatha yoga poses help the nervous system become calm and lay the groundwork for deep meditation. Both ancient texts and hatha yoga's physical practice are the foundation of modern yoga.

Varanasi is well recognized for being the holiest city in India and for being the birthplace of the ancient healing systems of Ayurveda and Yoga.
