Don't think that I suddenly jump to the romantic period. Studying this period is quite interesting for those who love nature. So let's get started!
Romanticism is an artistic, literary, musical and intellectual movement that originated in Europe toward the end of the 18th century. They believe in subjectivity, emphasis on individualism, spontaneity, and solitary life rather than life in society. It arises after the enlightenment movement. The romantic period lasted from 1798- 1837. This period is the celebration of nature and the common man. The reasoning was given a lot of importance during the Enlightenment movement. Unless the romantic period gave a lot of importance to emotions and feelings. Romantic age poets like Wordsworth and Coleridge supported the ideas of the French revolution. They believe in the freedom of an individual.
The industrial revolution started during the romantic age. So they were many harmful effects of the Industrial Revolution like pollution, materialization, child labour, and Dehumanization of labour. So writers started pointing out the importance of nature, beauty and imagination to connect people with nature to keep their humanity intact.
Literary features: simple and plain language was used. They wrote for common people. Feelings and emotions gained centre stage. It offends the logic and rationalism of the enlightenment age. They idealized rural life. They believe that nature was a place of spiritual truth and beauty. We can find supernatural elements in their works, especially in Coleridge's Christabel. Coleridge coined the term “ Willing suspension of disbelief" so that readers can enjoy reading about supernatural elements in literature. Free verse gained popularity. In the romantic age, poets rejected strict poetic meters such as Heroic couplets which were used in abundance during the enlightenment period such as Alexander pope.
Major writers were William Wordsworth, S. T.Colreidge, Keats, Shelley, and Byron.
