As a human, all of us grow up with certain mindset.Development of mindset is depend upon our age, gender, religion, region, social, economical,political cultural ideology and backgrounds Sometimes we enter into heated arguments due to difference of prospective or point of view which is directly related to our mindset. What if current argument is about to decide life and death of a young man? This is what today's film blog is about.
12 Angry Men (1957), directed by Sidney Lumet, staring Henry Fonda, Lee .J.Cobb, Ed begley is courtroom drama written by Reginal Rose.The film opens in New York County Courthouse, Where judge is instructing jury to decide whether convict is guilty or not.The convict, 18 years old young man, has stabbed his father to death and belong to slum area of the city. The judge further tells jury, if they have any chance of reasonable doubt they are suppose to give verdict of not guilty. If they found out the convict is guilty, he will receive death sentence. The decision must be unanimous.
All evidences are against the convict. Two witness has testified against defendant. At first instants, 12 juries seems to take decision lightly. One of them is in hurry to attend the game and one is hurry to catch up the movie in theater. Everyone settles down in one room to decide fate of a young man. At first round of voting, jury no.8 (Henry Fonda) pleaded for not guilty making votes 11 v/s 1 and film proceeds.
First characteristic of the film is, it is black and white. It shows dual between truth and lie in the movie. All juries are numbered from 1 to 12 and strangers to each others. Each one of them is from different age group and social-cultural background belong to different economical classes. Their opinions on this case is based on the their personal experiences and conflicts as well. Some has biased thinking process and has no sympathy for convict even as a human being. At one point, they starts fighting with each other.
This courtroom dram is totally different from the stylist Indian cinema dramas. We get hooked up with logical thinking of jury no.8 at different points of the argument. They way he points out loop holes of the investigation process done by authorities blows our mind. We start sensing gradual shift of thinking process of other juries as story proceeds.This movie gives us time to think on each argument done and we become eager to know about final verdict of the group.
This entire team has done excellent work for this masterpiece. No wonder this film is number 1 on critics and cinephiles all around the world. To experience one of the greatest cinematic legal-ethical battle of human emotions, this movie is must watch for everyone.
