The sights he saw from a hilltop in that small town disturbed him. He witnessed firsthand one of the most ferocious wars of the nineteenth century. Ten thousand people died on the battlefield and fifteen thousand soldiers were badly wounded and fighting for their lives. Seeing those miseries, the work that came to Dunand was forgotten, humanity woke up in shock. Around 500 of the injured soldiers were brought to the temple in Chittoor. Dunand rushed there and started cleaning the wounds by giving first aid despite having no medical experience. He brought two doctors from that town and asked him to see the medicine. He wrote down the details of dying soldiers and arranged to send messages to their respective families. He arranged food with the money he had brought and called more doctors to treat him.
Dunant stayed there for a month and observed the soldiers. In the end, one hundred soldiers died and four hundred soldiers recovered and returned home through his efforts. After returning to Switzerland, Dunand completely forgot about his Algerian farm. Night and day scenes of war appeared before his eyes. He was disturbed to think how many soldiers would have died carelessly on so many battlefields. He thought that in the future, an international organization should be created to provide first aid to injured soldiers and save their lives, wherever the war takes place in the world. Solferino wrote a book about the sights and experiences he had in the war under the title Memoirs.
Medical treatment should be provided without discrimination to soldiers of any side who are injured in war and doctors and nurses should be allowed to treat them without hindrance. Civilians should be trained to help in times of war. In that book, he requested that all the countries of the world should cooperate for such a project. The first two editions of the book, printed by Dunant, quickly sold out. Encouraged, Dunant expanded his claim in the next edition. Accordingly, not only during wars but also in any country where natural disasters such as floods, storms, earthquakes and fires occur, relief work should be carried out directly there. He expressed his opinion that an international organization should be created for it.
Today, the organization has spread throughout the world to the extent that there is hardly a country without a Red Cross. When it comes to grief relief, the first organization that comes to mind is the Red Cross. Dunand's birthday is celebrated annually on May 8th as Red Cross Day. The reason why Jean-Henri Dunant was able to make such a big mark in history is because of his lofty thought to alleviate the sufferings of mankind, his humanity to extend a helping hand to those who are suffering, and his mentality that does not give up when faced with obstacles. Like Dunand, when humanity and courage combine with high thoughts, we too can conquer the sky we want.
